Section Modulus calculation and optimization
AIM :
* To calculate the section modulus in hood design its given the idea about how much load the given structure can take
SECTION MODULUS :
Section modulus is the direct measure of the strength of the steel. Bending a steel section that has a larger section modulus than another will be stronger and harder to bend. Section modulus is a geometric property for a given cross-section used in the design of flexural members.
If two beams are made of the same material and comparing the “section modulus” of two beams, the beam with bigger section modulus will be tougher and more capable to withstand larger loads.
FORMULA :
S = I/y
Where,
S = Section Modulus
I = Moment of Inertia
y = distance between the neutral axis and the extreme end of the object
PROCEDURE :
* First we take the hood assembly then using intersection command to create the intersection line along with yz datum plane
* Then we got a inner intersection line and outer intersection line we need to extract the outer intersect line only using extract command
* To using line to connect the two intersection lines
* Using fill command to fill the surafce
* Then using moment of inertia command to take the values
* We got a max and minimum value we take to clauculate the minmimum value
*We take the minimum value to find the moment of inertia
HOOD DESIGN :

CALCULATION :

S=I/y
I = MOMENT OF INERTIA (MINIMUM VALUE)
Y=2/Y (OR) TOTAL LENGTH
Y =483.581/2 =241.790
I = 1.675*10^6MM^4
S=1.675*10^6/241.790
S = 6,927.499 MM^3
INTERSECTION OF OFFSET IN 0.5MM OUTERPANEL :

I =1.728*10^6
Y = 241.790
S = 1.728*10^6/241.790
S = 7,146.697 MM^3
Increasing the gap in between the outer and the inner panel leads to increament in the section modulus,so resistant to bending will also be get increased due to this ,strength of the hood will increase.
NOW CALCULATE THE CHANGE IN % :
S =(6,927.499-7,146.697)/ 6,927.499*100 = 3.16% IN SECTION MODULUS
CONCLUSION :
WHEN WE OFFSET THE OUTER PANEL IN 0.5MM WE GET A MORE SECTION MODULUS AND MORE STRENGTH
