Project on Concrete Mix Design for various grades of Concrete

Calculate the Concrete Mix Design for M35 grade concrete with fly ash?

1. Target mean strength of concrete:

f'ck = fck+1.65*S

f'ck 35+1.65*5

=43.25 N/mm2

2. Selection of water cement ratio:

Maximum cement ratio= 0.45 (From table 5 of IS 456-2000)

On experience water cement ratio is 0.4

0.4<0.45

Hence ok.

3. Selection of water content:

The maximum water content for 20mm aggregate is 186 It.

For 100mm slump = 186+(6/100) *186

= 197 It

As superplasticizer is used the water content is reduced to 29%

Hence water content = 197*0.7

= 140 It

4. Selection of cement content:

W = 140 kg

w/c = 0.4

C = w/0.4

C = 140/0.4

= 350 kg/m3

350 > 320

Hence ok

The fly ash is used.

So it increases 10% cementatious

material content.

350*1.1 = 385 kg/m3

Fly ash at 30% total cementatious material is

35-30% 115 kg/m3.

5. Volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate content:

For 20mm aggregate the volume of

coarse aggregate is 0.64 as per table

3 IS 10262:2009

For pumpable concrete, these are reduced by 10%

Volume of coarse aggregate =

0.64*0.9

= 0.576

Volume of fine aggregate = 1-0.576

= 0.424

6. Mix calculation:

Volume of concrete = 1m3

Volume of cement = 0.086 m3

Volume of water = 0.140 m3

Volume of chemical admixture = 0.006 m3

Volume of aggregate (FA&CA) = 0.716 m3

Mass of coarse aggregate = 1130 kg/m3

Mass of fine aggregate = 831 kg/m3

Volume of flyash = 0.052 m3

7. Mix proportion:

Cement = 270 kg/m3

Water = 140 kg/m3

Fly Ash = 115kg/m3

Fine aggregate = 831 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate = 1130 kg/m3

Chemical admixture = 7 kg/m3

Water cement ratio = 0.364

Mix Ratio = 1:2.15:2.94

Calculate the concrete mix design for M50 grade concrete without flyash?

 1. Target mean strength of concrete:

f'ck = fck+1.65*S

= 50+1.65*5

= 58.25 N/mm2

2. Selection of water cement ratio:

As per IS 456-2000, table 5,

Water cement ratio is 0.4.

3. Selection of water content:

The maximum water content for 20mm aggregate is 186 It.

For 100mm slump = 186+(6/100) *186

= 197 It

As superplasticizer is used the water content is reduced to 29%

Hence water content = 197*0.7

= 140 It

4. Selection of cement content:

 Water cement ratio = 0.4

Cement content = 140/0.4

= 350 kg/m3

From table 5 of IS 456-2000,

The cement content is 320 kg/m3

350>320 kg/m3

Hence ok.

5. Volume of coarse aggregate and fine aggregate content:

The corrected value of coarse aggregate for water cement ratio is 0.64.

For pumpable concrete, these are reduced by 10%.

Volume of coarse aggregate = 0.64*0.9

= 0.576

Volume of fine aggregate = 1-0.576

= 0.424

6. Mix Calculation:

Volume of concrete = 1 m3

Volume of cement = 0.111 m3

Volume of water = 0.140 m3

Volume of chemical admixture = 0.006 m3

Volume of aggregate (FA&CA) = 0.743 m3

Mass of coarse aggregate = 1173 kg/m3

Mass of fine aggregate = 863 kg/m3

7. Mix proportion:

Cement = 350 kg/m3

Water = 140 kg/m3

Fine aggregate = 863 kg/m3

Coarse aggregate = 1173 kg/m3

Chemical admixture = 7 kg/m3

Water cement ratio = 0.4

Mix Ratio = 1:2.46:3.35
