Project - Analysis of mobile or Wifi network using an android app
Analysis of mobile using an android app
Using Netmonster and or any other similar android app to perform walk test of the network, which should include the mapping of the coverage of the mobile signal onto google Map and to identify the performance of the network in terms of handovers, IRAT handovers, Cell reselections, network blackholes and call drops. The project should accompany reports for the improvement of the performance. The analysis should include the bands, capabilities of the network, throughput calculations and MO/MT call performances
1.GSM Report
Steps to create the report
- Please make sure that the technology selected is GSM on your phone
- Download the netmonster application or Network infor lite application https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cz.mroczis.netmonster&hl=en_US&gl=US
- From the APP
- Check the band (900/1800). Check for the RXL of the current Base station that you are connected to and the distance value based on the timing advance. Calculate the FSPL and additional losses of the cell, based on the GSM link budget assuming Transmit power for 40 Watt
FSPL = 20 Log10(D)+ 20 Log10(f) + 32.44 = 20 log10(0.02) + 20 log10(1800) + 32.43 = 63.55
Rx power should be = 43 dBm – 63.55 = - 20.55dBm
Rxl = -91 dBm so additional losses are 70.443 dB
- Perform a walk test of the network and identify the signal dip / increase as you move around the locality. What are your observations?
In this exercise the student can use the MAP feature of the APP to identify the site location and coverage value as they move. The goal is to identify coverage black holes. To map the signal strength, export the values into a KML file and upload it into https://earth.google.com/
Perform a call, and move around the indoor coverage, identify the place where the call drops? What is the RXL at the time of call drop? Identify the location of call drop and corresponding RXL value
Call drops as we move away from the signalling range of the network
RXL during call 115dBm after call drop 110dBm
RXL drop by 5dBm
- Perform a call, with Voice over WIFI enabled, disconnect WIFI during the call? What are the impacts?
The call should sustain as the signalling is through the cellular network and it will help to switch the data traffic from WIFI back to the mobile network
Value during the call
Value after the call drop
- Calculate the Edge Throughput of the cell, compare it with the throughput that you are getting on the phone. Justify the difference.
The calculated throughput is the for the 1 sector for all the users. The throughput is based on the number of users in the cell.
ADDITIONAL Info From Network infor lite application APP
1.Wi-Fi Report
Analysis of Wifi network using an android app
Use the WIFI Signal monitor android application to perform the coverage analysis of the WIFI coverage at your home, map the location to identify the interfering SSIDs, fading causes, network blackholes. Suggest ways to improve the coverage of the WIFI in your home, which should include the selection of channel number and reason to do so, coverage improvement of WIFI, optimum position for the WIFI router, use of any repeaters, extenders or a mesh WIFI. Plot it on a Map.
Project 2
- Please make sure that you are connected to the WIFI
- Download the following applications on your android phone
- WIFI Heatmap – Network analyser and Signal meter: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ua.com.wifisolutions.wifiheatmap&hl=en_US&gl=US
- WIFI analyzer : https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vrem.wifianalyzer&hl=en_US&gl=US
Check for all the access names and the current signal level.
As you can see in the figure the connected AP has -47dBm as the signal strength on the channel 1.
Calculate the FSPL for 2.4Ghz with a Tx power as per the configuration done in the router.
Usually the Tx power in the router is in range of 100mW or 20dBM.
In the above example, the FSPL with 2-meter range can be calculated as
FSPL = 20 Log10(2400) + 20 log10(2) – 27.55 = 46.05 dBM
Rx Power = Tx Power – FSPL – other losses
-62 = 20 – 46.05 – x , x = -26.07 +62 , x = 35.395 dBm These other losses include fading, interference and the attenuation because of the elements such as furniture or glass in the house.
Check for the other AP transmitting in the range and identify the optimum channel for which your AP would perform best. As in the figure there are channels from 4-7 have the most interference
Walk around the coverage area and check for the variation in signal
Check for the deviation in the signal as you move away from the Access Point. You can also use a heatmap to showcase this. To create a heatmap you can use the WIFI Heatmap application
To create a heat map
- Create an approximate floor plan for your home, using any drawing app such as MS paint.
- Select the diameter of a capture point, whenever you will take a measurement, the captured paint will be with this diameter on the heatmap.
- Take measurements around various spots of your home and identify the coverage black holes
Now calculate the FSPL for the frequency of your WIFI hotspot for the worst point of coverage and try to identify the difference in FSPL and other losses.
FSPL with 0.5-meter range can be calculated as
FSPL = 20 Log10(2400) + 20 log10(0.5) – 27.55 = 34dBM
- What can be the causes of these other losses?
Interference
- Try to modify the channel number, power and other parameters of your WIFI hotspot to analyse the change in signal strength at the worst signal point. What improves the coverage?
- What is the throughput at the worst point signal coverage?
Worst point very far from the router is 79.6dBm
- What is the difference between the best channel condition to the worst channel condition in terms of throughput? Justify the difference, identify the link adaptation techniques that may have helped in optimizing the throughput
Best channel throughput =20dBm
Worst channel throughput=80dBm
The link adaptation technique that can be used Data scheduling
