Project - Analysis of a practical automotive wiring circuit
1] Identify each of the major elements in the above automotive wiring diagram.
.Battery,Fuse,
.Starter,
.Ignition Coil,
.Generator,
.Distributor,
.Lamp,
.Current & Voltage Regulator,
.Horn,
.Ammeter, etc...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2] Explain the purpose and working of any three elements briefly.
STARTER MOTOR
A starter motor is simply an electric motor that turns your engine on when you switch the ignition. To do this, the starter motor requires a lot of torque to turn the engine at such fast speeds, so that it pulls fuel and air into the cylinders and compresses them at the same time.
GENERATOR
An Generator/Alternator is a type of electric generator used in modern automobiles to charge the battery and to power the electrical system when its engine is running.
DISTRIBUTOR
A distributor is an electric and mechanical device used in the ignition system of older spark ignition engines. The distributor's main function is to route electricity from the ignition coil to each spark plug at the correct time.
IGNITION COIL
The ignition coil is a high voltage (low current) transformer that converts the vehicle's 12 volt power supply to the 25-30,000 volts required to jump the gap of the spark plug, thus instigating combustion. With the development of engine management, ignition coils have undergone a complete redesign.

3] If the total load is 10A from battery, what should be the fuse rating.
P = V * I
Car Battery Voltage is 12 V
P = 12*10 = 120 W
We know that,
"Fuse Rating is 25% More than actual Power Rating"
Power for Fuse Rating = 120 * 1.25 = 150 Watt
I = P/V = 150/12 = 12.5 A
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4] If 500W is the load, what is the voltage and capacity of battery you recommend.
If 500W is the load,
P = V*I
Voltage Recommended is 12 V
500 = 12 * I
I = 500/12 = 41.67 A
Capacity = Current * Time
Capacity = 41.67 * 1 Hr = 41.67 Ah
Capacity Recommended is 41.67 Ah
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5] Identify any two elements which are connected parallel to each other. Why they are connected in parallel?
- Generator
- Current and Voltage Regulator.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6] Identify any two elements which are connected in series. Why they are connected in series?
.Battery & Starter are connected in series.
