Project - Analysis of a practical automotive wiring circuit

1. Ignition Switch, Battery, Starter, Ignition coil, Fuse, Ammeter, Generator, Current and Voltage Regulator, Distributor, Breaker.

2. Battery:

i) Its purpose is to store DC current.

ii) It works to supply the stored DC current to the components connected to it in the circuits.

3. Since the load is 10A, the fuse rating should be 15A.

4. Given:

Load, P = 500W

Battery Voltage, Vdc = 12V

To Find:

Battery Voltage, V =?

Battery Capacity, B =?

Solution:

i) Since the load is given in Watts, the current I is calculated as,

I = P/Vdc

= 500/12

= 41.67

I = 41.7 A

ii) Battery Capacity, B = (100 * I * t) / (100-Q)

where,

time, t = 24hr

Remaining Percent, Q = 60% assumed

B = (100 * 41.7 * 24) / (100 - 60)

= (100080) / 40

B = 1668 Ah

Result:

For the assumed 60% remaining battery power for a 500 W load, we need the battery capacity of 1668 Ah, So we select a battery with approximately 2000Ah.

5. i) Parts connected in parallel are the ammeter and fuel gauge.

ii) They are connected in parallel since both will be working in parallel as soon as the ignition switch is turned on.

6. i) Parts connected in series are battery and Starter.

ii) They are connected in series because when the ignition switch is turned on only when the battery is having enough power supply, then the starter will run.
