Challenge

Project

1. Objective - To create a model of a coffee cup to 3D print.

This simple design is built by drawing 2 concentric circles with the cup thickness in mind. Then the circles are extruded using the pull tool.

The handle is drawn by keeping a sketch plane going through the center of the cup and the sharp edges are rounded off by using the round tool. A point is added to the start of the handle from which a circle is drawn to define the thickness of the handle.

The sweep pull is used to extrude the circle along the handle edges to complete this model.

The sharp edges are selected and the edges are rounded off which is found in the pull tool option.

2. Considering FDM as the 3D printing technology for this model the following points are to be noted.

  • The cup can be printed with the same orientation because the base of the cup will act as a brim. Therefore no extra support will be needed from the base plate.
  • The coffee cup will be acting as a support therefore, we will be using 100% infill.
  • Support will need to be given for the handle.
  • It will be the cheapest and fastest way of manufacturing as opposed to other methods of 3D printing technologies available.
