A. Thermal properties of materials used in the engine components plays an important role is efficient method of transferring heat from engine generated during operation to avoid the failure of the system. The properties such as specific heat capacity, thermal conductivity, density, etc., plays major role in material selection. Based on series of simulations and experiments the best suited material to improve engine performance is chosen along with factors such as cost, feasibility and weight. These materials and collant circuit target to maintain the temperature of engine system below certain limit. Higher operating temperture in the combustion chamber results in higher thermal efficiency, to achieve this superior materials should be used in place. Further thermal barrier coatings are used to perform this task, by reducing the heat loss to coolant circuit through engine walls and improving the engine performance. Thus the emission of an engine is reduced with increased thermal efficiency (fuel).

B. There are various factors which account to improve the performance, efficiency and environmental impact of IC engines. The efficiency has direct control over the environmental impact, with increasing fuel effiecieny the emission can be controlled.

  • Frictional losses: The design should aimto reduce friction contact surfaces between moving parts in an engines. Thus an optimized clearance design, low-friction surfaces tend reduce the heat loss and netterefficiency.
  • Piston rings : The better piston ring design which does not allos the oil entering into combustion chamber thus avoiding the risk of oil ash and particulate emissions
  • Improvement in Catalytic converters helpsto reduce emission
  • Higher compression ratio
  • Transmission
