Project 2 - Implement the Code for controlling the retraction and extension of Airplane’s landing gear

___________________________________________________________________________

Considering how the Finite State Machine (FSM) will be used to control the retraction and extension of the airplane’s landing gear and direction of the hydraulic valve. I would like to say about the states of the system, the transitions, and the inputs that trigger those transitions.

States for landing Gear System:

1. These are few key states for the landing gear and control systems:

RETRACTED – The landing gear is up and stored in the airplane's fuselage, ready for flight.
EXTENDED – The landing gear is down and locked, ready for landing or taxiing.
RETRACTING – The landing gear is in the process of retracting after takeoff.
EXTENDING – The landing gear is in the process of extending before landing.
FAULT – A failure has occurred in the system, such as a mechanical or sensor issue.

Inputs and Events:
Takeoff Command (Takeoff) – The event that occurs when the plane has taken off and the landing gear needs to be retracted.
Landing Command (Landing) – The event that occurs when the plane is preparing to land and the landing gear needs to be extended.
Gear Lock Status (Lock) – A signal from the sensors that confirms whether the landing gear is securely locked (either extended or retracted).
Fault Condition (Fault) – Any malfunction, such as an issue with the hydraulic system or a sensor failure.
Hydraulic Valve Control (Valve Control) – This triggers the action of the valve controlling the hydraulic pressure for the gear movement.

FSM Transitions Based on Inputs:

Here’s a breakdown of the FSM transitions considering the conditions:
From RETRACTED to RETRACTING:
Condition: A "Takeoff" command is given (either by a switch or automated system).
Action: Activate the valve to retract the landing gear, starting the hydraulic retraction process.
Next State: The system transitions to the RETRACTING state

From RETRACTING to RETRACTED:
Condition: The gear fully retracts, and the gear lock status confirms the gear is securely in the retracted position.
Action: Deactivate the hydraulic valve and stop the retraction process.
Next State: The system transitions to the RETRACTED state.

From EXTENDED to EXTENDING:
Condition: A "Landing" command is given (either by the landing gear switch or an automatic trigger based on altitude/speed).
Action: Activate the valve to begin extending the landing gear, starting the hydraulic extension process.
Next State: The system transitions to the EXTENDING state.
From EXTENDING to EXTENDED:
Condition: The landing gear is fully extended, and the gear lock status confirms the gear is securely locked in the extended position.
Action: Deactivate the hydraulic valve and stop the extension process.
Next State: The system transitions to the EXTENDED state.
From RETRACTING or EXTENDING to FAULT:
Condition: If a fault condition occurs (e.g., failure of hydraulic pressure, sensor malfunction, or failure to lock), the system must enter the FAULT state.
Action: Trigger an alarm or take corrective action to stop the current operation (either retraction or extension).
Next State: The system transitions to the FAULT state for troubleshooting or error handling.

Step-by-Step Explanation of FSM Transitions:

  1. Initial State (RETRACTED):
    • The landing gear starts in the RETRACTED state when the aircraft is in flight, and the gear is stored inside the fuselage.
    • When the Takeoff Command is received (e.g., automatically or via a switch), the system transitions to RETRACTING and sends a signal to the hydraulic valve to retract the landing gear.
  2. Transition to RETRACTING:
    • In the RETRACTING state, the hydraulic valve is controlled to retract the landing gear. The FSM waits for the gear lock sensor to confirm that the gear is securely locked in the retracted position.
    • If the gear locks securely, the FSM transitions to RETRACTED. If not, the FSM may transition to the FAULT state.
  3. Transition to EXTENDING:
    • During the landing phase, when the Landing Command is given, the FSM transitions from RETRACTED to EXTENDING. The valve is controlled to allow hydraulic fluid to extend the landing gear.
    • The system checks for proper gear locking at the fully extended position. Once the gear locks in place, the FSM transitions to EXTENDED.
  4. Fault Handling (FAULT State):
    • If at any point the system detects a FAULT (e.g., hydraulic pressure loss, sensor error, or gear not locking properly), the FSM enters the FAULT state.
    • In the FAULT state, all operations are halted. Alerts or error codes are generated for maintenance.

Key Outputs of the System:

  1. Hydraulic Valve Control:
    • The software will output control signals to the hydraulic valve, either directing the hydraulic fluid to extend or retract the landing gear, depending on the state of the FSM.
  2. Gear Locking Mechanism:
    • The system will monitor whether the landing gear is securely locked in place, either extended or retracted, using sensors. The gear can only transition to a new state if the locking mechanism is confirmed to be engaged.
  3. Fault Alerts:
    • If a fault condition is detected, the system outputs an alert to the pilot or maintenance system, indicating a failure in the gear system or hydraulic pressure.

      Pseudocode for FSM Implementation:

      Here's a simple pseudocode to implement the FSM for controlling the landing gear:

      #include <Arduino.h> // Include Arduino-specific functions

      // Define states for the Landing Gear System

      enum GearState { RETRACTED, RETRACTING, EXTENDING, EXTENDED, FAULT };

      // Declare function prototypes

      void retractGear();

      void extendGear();

      void activateValve(const char* command);

      bool checkGearLock(const char* position);

      void handleError(const char* message);

      void onTakeoffCommand();

      void onLandingCommand();

      void setup();

      void loop();

      // Initialize the current state of the gear

      enum GearState currentState = RETRACTED;

      // Pin setup for hydraulic valve

      const int valvePin = 7; // Example pin for controlling the valve

      // Triggered when takeoff command is received

      void onTakeoffCommand() {

      if (currentState == EXTENDED) {

      currentState = RETRACTING; // Transition to Retracting

      retractGear();

      } else {

      handleError("Unexpected state during takeoff.");

      }

      }

      // Triggered when landing command is received

      void onLandingCommand() {

      if (currentState == RETRACTED) {

      currentState = EXTENDING; // Transition to Extending

      extendGear();

      } else {

      handleError("Unexpected state during landing.");

      }

      }

      // Function to retract the landing gear

      void retractGear() {

      // Activate hydraulic valve to start retracting the gear

      activateValve("retract");

      // Check if gear has successfully retracted

      if (checkGearLock("retracted")) {

      currentState = RETRACTED; // Transition to Retracted state

      } else {

      currentState = FAULT; // Transition to Fault state

      handleError("Gear failed to retract.");

      }

      }

      // Function to extend the landing gear

      void extendGear() {

      // Activate hydraulic valve to start extending the gear

      activateValve("extend");

      // Check if gear has successfully extended

      if (checkGearLock("extended")) {

      currentState = EXTENDED; // Transition to Extended state

      } else {

      currentState = FAULT; // Transition to Fault state

      handleError("Gear failed to extend.");

      }

      }

      // Function to control the hydraulic valve (simulated here)

      void activateValve(const char* command) {

      if (strcmp(command, "extend") == 0) {

      // Activate the hydraulic valve to extend the gear

      digitalWrite(valvePin, HIGH); // Example: Use a pin to control the valve

      } else if (strcmp(command, "retract") == 0) {

      // Activate the hydraulic valve to retract the gear

      digitalWrite(valvePin, LOW); // Example: Reverse pin logic for retraction

      }

      }

      // Simulated function to check if the gear is securely locked in position

      bool checkGearLock(const char* position) {

      if (strcmp(position, "extended") == 0) {

      return true; // Simulate gear locking in place for extended position

      } else if (strcmp(position, "retracted") == 0) {

      return true; // Simulate gear locking in place for retracted position

      }

      return false; // Simulate failure in locking (for fault condition)

      }

      // Function to handle errors and print messages

      void handleError(const char* message) {

      // Print error message to Serial Monitor

      Serial.println(message);

      // Additional error recovery or logging actions can be added here

      }

      void setup() {

      // Initialize serial communication (for debugging, if using Arduino)

      Serial.begin(9600); // Initialize serial communication at 9600 baud rate

      // Set up valve control pin

      pinMode(valvePin, OUTPUT); // Set the valve control pin as output

      // Initial state

      Serial.println("Landing gear system initialized.");

      }

      void loop() {

      // Simulate takeoff or landing commands (for testing purposes)

      // Uncomment one of the lines below to test

      // onTakeoffCommand(); // Uncomment to simulate takeoff command

      // onLandingCommand(); // Uncomment to simulate landing command

      // Add your loop logic here to simulate real-time operations (e.g., using sensors)

      }
