Project 2 - Gender Bias in Science and Technical field

WOMEN IN STEM FIELDS

This data will aid mission driven organizations to harness the power of data visualization for social change. Women are tracked from Science and Mathematics background beginning from their education to joining jobs in these sectors. The data set contains the data of women graduated by years, employed persons, Stem Jobs by Education and their Salary comparison with respect to men and across different ethnic groups. This dashboard addresses some major gaps between Men and Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) fields.

The data displays that most women are working as Biological scientists and Chemists and material scientists as compared to other STEM fields

Occupation Sum of Women (Percent of total employed)
Biological scientists 46
Chemists and materials scientists 40.4
Computer and mathematical occupations 25.2
Engineers, all other 15.3

Through the years 2000 to 2015 a downtrend can be seen in the percent of women graduating in Computer Science and Engineering. Around 18% of the women graduated in STEM majors Computer Science and Engineering stream in 2015. Even though the branch of Computer Science is emerging , the non-inclination to this branch is lack of job opportunities.

In visualizing the data which includes various level education, women prefer Health-related STEM jobs as compared to others. Around 45 percent of women with Professional/Doctoral Degree and around 80 percent of women with their master’s education are in Health-related jobs .

Majorly around 69% women are working as Health professionals as compared to men. Around 38 percent of women are working in Computers who majored in Computers and around 24 percent of women are working in Engineering jobs who majored in Engineering.

The difference in salary in Asian women and Asian men is 15300 dollars illustrating that the women are paid less as comapred in to men.

Asians receive more salary than other ethnic group.

The gender gap lies for a varierty of reasons. The uneven access of education to women as compared to men led to men getting better job opportunities, thereby women lacking employment equality.Women are considered weaker race and because of lack of bodily autonomy women receive less salary as compared to men. But since Asian women are more active in job sectors, their pay is more as compared to other women in different ethnic group.
