Project 2_Design & Analysis of a Hostel building at Guwahati, Assam

Please find attached anwser sheet

In this project, participants will get to experience the entire design process from modelling, analysis, design, and preparation of construction drawings. The architectural drawings of a G+3 RCC building is provided. The following information on the building is to be used:

Location – Guwahati, Assam

Function – Hostel block in an academic institute

The walls will be made of AAC blocks. Other loadings are to be calculated as per the architectural drawings.

The buildings rests on type 3 soil. Piles of length 10 meters and 500 mm diameter with a load-carrying capacity of 280 KN is to be used.

The ground floor level will be at a height of 2 meters above the existing site level to avoid floodwater enter the building.

M25 grade of concrete with Fe500 for longitudinal reinforcement and Fe 415 for shear reinforcement is to be used.

The following design IS codes will be required for reference:

IS 875 part 1

IS 875 part 2

IS 13920

IS 1893

IS 2911 part 2

IS 456

SP 34

Students will have to produce the following:

Etabs model for the two blocks on either side of the expansion gap

Foundation details illustrating the pile & pile cap reinforcement

Tie beam details connecting the pile caps

Column reinforcement

Framing plan for typical floor

Beam reinforcements for ground floor

  • Open the ETABS software click on new Modal and select the units, data base, steel design code IS 800 and concrete design code IS 456.
  • In new model quick templates Click Custom grid spacing - Grid system data give grid spacing in X and Y direction In X direction of grid and Y direction of grid
  • Click quick start rectangular grid i,e Story data enter the story up to 3 and height 3.45m and plinth 2m. all story will be same as story1.
  • Define material properties -Add new material property – Indian – concrete and Grade M25 same way for steel property.
  • Define Section property for beam - size and grade and cover to be specify same way for columns and slab.
  • Fixe the columns by clicking Quick draw column by selecting C300x600 and 300x900 at grid junction by clicking
  • Fixe the Beams by clicking Quick draw beam by selecting B300x450 and 300x600from grid to grid clicking

Fixe the slab by clicking Quick draw floor/ wall by selecting Slab150 clicking center of four beams

  • 12) Assign the Floor load – live load on slabs 2KN/m2 and roof slab 1.5KN/m2 separately

Live load for Rooms = 2KN/m2 and Passage = 3KN/m2

  • Live load for Roof = 1.5KN/m2
  • 13) Assign the brick wall load 4KN/m on beams by selecting beams
  • Define Load Patterns – dead load live load brick wall load and seismic load in Eqx + & - ve and Eqy + & - ve

Tx = 0.09 x h / Ѵ d = 0.09 15.8 / Ѵ 68.075 = 0.17sec

Ty = 0.09 x h / Ѵ d = 0.09 15.8 / Ѵ 13.75 = 0.38sec

  • Define the Load Combination – Add default design combs
  • Define the mass source
  • Define diaphragms
  • Analysis -Check Modal by selecting all – click OK
  • Run analysis
  • Display Show table - Base Reactions
  • Reaction in x and y direction

Run the structure for RCC design

  • Reinforcement Area of each columns
  • Reinforcement Area of columns and Beams
  • Reinforcement Area of each Beams

  • Modal was checked in all ways and then run and see reaction and then export the modal in ETABS and open in SAFE software with keeping all their load and combination and reaction at base level. After opening in SAFE software.
  • Define Material property
  • New modal define the IS code 456
  • Define Design preference

  • Define Unites
  • Section Property

  • Drawing Pile cap
  • Assign Slab property

Spring constant = E A / L = 25000 x 196349.54 / 10000 = 490873N/mm = 490.87 KN/mm

Area = Pai x d2 /4 = 3.14 x 500x 500 / 4 = 196349.54mm2

D = 500mm dia of Pile

E = 5000 fcak = 5000 = 5000 25 = 25000 N/mm2

  • Run for analysis before it Check the properties and loads
  • Display the reaction force

Display deformation shape

Deformation less than 25mm

  • Display Punching shear design

Punching value is less than 1

  • Draw design strips in X and Y direction
  • Run for design reinforcement
  • Reinforcement along A layer

Max Bottom reinforcement area =706.26mm2

Reinforcement along B layer

Max Bottom reinforcement area =1142.40mm2
