Project 2

AIM

This project aims to design a multi-story twisting tower featuring a complex architectural structure, using advanced Building Information Modeling (BIM) processes. The project will explore using Dynamo scripting for generating the core structure, alongside facade design and architectural detailing achieved through massing. This model will showcase high-level architectural and engineering capabilities while providing insights into the application of BIM methodologies.

INTRODUCTION

This project presents the design of a multi-story twisting tower, combining structural complexity and architectural elegance. Using a Dynamo script, a highly adaptable and scalable structure is created, emphasizing the dynamism and flexibility of BIM tools in architectural design. This twisting tower showcases both interior and exterior architectural features, aiming to create a visually engaging, functional space. The design process integrates various BIM techniques, such as facade massing, to add intricate architectural details that enhance the tower's aesthetic appeal. By producing 3D views, walkthrough videos, and rendered images from different angles, this project aims to give a comprehensive visual representation of the design. The report accompanying this project will detail the benefits and limitations of applying BIM in such complex structures, addressing challenges encountered and suggesting improvements for future BIM-based projects.

PROCEDURE

1. Creating the Dynamo Script for the Multi-Story Complex Structure:

Begin by launching Dynamo within the BIM software and setting up a new script to define the multi-story twisting tower structure.

Use parametric design techniques to create the tower's base geometry, allowing for adjustments in the number of floors, rotation angle for each floor, and overall height.

Implement a twisting algorithm to progressively rotate each floor, achieving a visually engaging twisted effect.

Verify the structure for stability and continuity as the height and twist increase, ensuring the model is structurally feasible.

2. Adding Façade Design and Architectural Features using Massing:

Once the core structure is completed, switch to the massing tools to design the building’s facade.

Create facade elements that complement the twisting form of the tower, considering window placement, balconies, or other external architectural features that align with the structure.

Experiment with different facade textures, materials, and patterns that can enhance the aesthetic appeal of the building.

Integrate other architectural elements, such as entrance canopies, terraces, or rooftop features, as necessary to add depth to the model.

3. Producing 3D Views and Visualizations:

Generate 3D views from various interior and exterior perspectives, capturing key features and viewpoints of the design.

Utilize walkthrough settings in the BIM software to create a virtual tour of the tower, highlighting notable design elements and architectural features.

Render several high-quality images and video animations, both for interior and exterior views, to showcase the finished model from multiple angles and in realistic lighting conditions.

4. Reporting on BIM Process Application:

Document the advantages and challenges encountered during the modeling process, focusing on the benefits of using BIM for complex structural designs like the twisting tower.

Outline specific pros, such as design flexibility, visualization capabilities, and data management benefits, as well as cons, like potential software limitations and processing power requirements.

Summarize the key challenges faced (e.g., handling complex geometries, time for rendering) and propose solutions for overcoming these issues in future BIM projects.

Include observations on how BIM processes could be improved for similar architectural projects, suggesting potential software or workflow enhancements.

Step 1: Set Up the Project in Dynamo

Launch Dynamo within BIM software (such as Revit) and start a new workspace.

2. Define the Basic Parameters for the building, such as:

Number of floors.

Floor-to-floor height.

Base radius or footprint dimensions.

3. Create the Base Geometry:

Start by creating a circle or polygon for the base footprint.

Adjust the size and shape of the base according to the desired design.

Step 2: Implement the Twisting Algorithm

1. Add Nodes for Rotation:

Set up rotation parameters for each floor.

Use a formula node or rotation node to define the angle by which each floor should twist relative to the one below it.

2. Stack Floors Vertically:

Set up a series of points for each floor based on the height parameter and apply the calculated rotation.

Connect the points to form floor slabs, creating the structure’s twisting form.

3. Adjust Structural Supports:

Add structural supports or columns to ensure the stability of the twisting structure.

Position columns or load-bearing elements so they align with the twist and provide sufficient support.

Step 3: Add Façade Design and Architectural Features Using Massing

1. Switch to Massing Tools:

Use the massing environment BIM software to create facade features.

2. Design the Façade:

Add a facade pattern, such as vertical or horizontal elements, to enhance the twisting effect.

Experiment with curtain wall patterns, glass panels, or other architectural textures.

3. Add Architectural Details:

Incorporate additional features, like balconies, sunshades, or shading devices, that complement the twist.

Design entrance areas, rooftop details, and any other distinctive architectural elements.

Step 4: Generate 3D Views and Create Walkthroughs

1. Create 3D Interior and Exterior Views:

Set up 3D camera views to capture interior spaces, such as the lobby, elevator core, or typical floor layouts.

Create exterior views from various angles to showcase the twisting design.

2. Produce Walkthrough Animations:

Use walkthrough or animation tools to create a virtual tour, moving through the main areas of the tower.

Adjust camera speed and path to highlight key design elements.

3. Render High-Quality Images:

Select key views for rendering.

Choose realistic lighting and materials to produce high-quality images that showcase the model’s architectural features.

Step 5: Document the BIM Process and Prepare a Report

1. Analyze the Benefits and Challenges of BIM:

Outline the pros of using BIM for this complex structure, such as enhanced visualization and parametric design flexibility.

Discuss any challenges encountered, such as managing high-performance demands, dealing with complex geometries, or adjusting the model to maintain structural integrity.

2. Identify Areas for Improvement:

Suggest improvements for future projects, like optimizing scripting methods or leveraging additional BIM tools to handle complex forms.

3. Summarize Observations:

Conclude the report with insights on how BIM processes helped achieve the final design and areas for further research or development.

4. Compile Visuals and Animations:

Include screenshots of key 3D views, rendered images, and any walkthrough animations in the report.

Provide a detailed explanation of each visual to ensure clarity and highlight the model's key architectural features.

RESULT

The project successfully achieved the goal of designing a multi-story twisting tower with intricate architectural features, demonstrating the effectiveness of BIM processes and Dynamo scripting in handling complex geometries. The following results were obtained:

1. Creation of a Parametric Twisting Structure:

A functional Dynamo script was developed to generate the twisting tower's core structure. The script allowed for easy adjustments in height, floor rotation, and overall geometry, resulting in a visually engaging, multi-story tower with a unique twisting effect.

2. Detailed Facade and Architectural Elements:

Using massing tools, a detailed facade was designed to complement the twist.
