Project 1 - Simulating a BTMS

1. Energy density calculator

By considering a battery with the specifications as mentioned:- 1000mAh 3.2V

  • The energy is given by E(J)= Voltage(V) x Charge(C)
  • Charge is given by Q(C)=Ampere(A) x time(s)

Therefore, for the above-mentioned battery:

Q = 1 x 3600 = 3600C

E = 3.2 x 3600 = 11520J

So, based on the above energy and considering the dimensions of battery from the given geometry, the energy density calculator had been implemented and is shown below:

2. While performing a steady-state simulation, is it OK to use any solid material? Use the analytical equation that was derived in the previous lectures to prove that the material properties are relevant or irrelevant while performing a steady-state simulation

If only conduction is considered, any kind of material property can be taken. But if the convection is also considered, the material properties become very important.

3. Setup each cell into its own separate solid-zone

From the picture provided below, it can be observed that each cell is separated into its own solid-zone.

4. For a baseline element length of 12,8,6 and 4 mm, what is the number of iterations required for convergence? Plot this trend and explain the result. Assume volumetric heat source to be equal to, 30000 W/m^3 and set inlet velocity to 4 m/s.

A total of 4 simulations are performed for different base element size of 12, 8, 6, & 4 mm.

The volumetric heat generated in the cell has been analysed and is show below.

12mm

8mm

Initially, a 2000 iterations are performed for 8mm and 12mm mesh size. But after observing the results, it is observed just 1000 iterations are sufficient for the simulation to reach steady state.

So, for the later simulations, only 1000 iterations are performed.

6mm

4mm

The simulation with element size 4 mm gives the best results compared to the other results.
