Project 1 - Simulating a BTMS
AIM:
The aim of this project is to simulate the flow inside a Battery Thermal Management System.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROJECT:
The main objectives are as follows,
1.Excel Calculator approach for Volumetric heat generation source.
2. Performing for different mesh sizes - 12,8,6 and 4 mm
3. Determining the Various results.
EXCEL CALCULATOR :

Here,
Charge times Voltage is Energy and Current times time in seconds is Charge in Coulombs.
So, we first need to find the charge in a mAh.
where,
mA will be 1/1000 of an Amphere for an hour and 1 hour is of 3600 seconds
So,
ImAh will be 0.001 Amps times 3600 seconds that gives 3.6 Coulombs of charge.
3.6 x 1 = 3.6
Now,
For values of any voltage, mAh times voltage times 3.6 gives energy in joules.
Hence, the energy stored in a 36 V, 15 amphere battery is 36x15 540 watthours. The VoltAmphour is 3600 Joules. So, this implies our battery has stored 1,944,000 Joules of energy. clearly a very close to the -2,110,000 Joules.
BATTERY THERMAL MANAGMENT SYSTEM SIMULATION CASE 1 :
meshing for the given geometry,

RESIDUAL PLOT:

VOLUME AVERAGE TEMP PLOT:

VELOCITY CONTOUR PLOT:

Similarly, it is performed for different cases and clearly it is observed that when we compared all the 4 cases of the residual plots and contour plots, we observed that if we refine the mesh to ultimate fine levels we can see an increase in the accuracy of the results. Also after a certain mesh size type the accuracy almost remains constant. This is the observation from this project.
finally,
CONCLUSION :
- The simulation of flow over a BTMS is performed well
- The heat generation source terms are derived based on battery specifications.
- The mesh size are varied and also observed the variation of accuracy of the results.
