Project 1 - Interfacing a 16*2 LCD with Arduino using I2C protocol

To interface a 16*2 LCD with Arduino using I2C protocol, you will need the following components:

  1. Arduino board
  2. 16*2 LCD display
  3. I2C module (such as PCF8574 or PCF8574A)
  4. Potentiometer (10K)
  5. Breadboard
  6. Jumper wires

Here are the steps to follow to interface the LCD with Arduino using I2C protocol:

  1. Connect the I2C module to the LCD display. Connect the VCC pin of the I2C module to the 5V pin of the Arduino, and connect the GND pin of the I2C module to the GND pin of the Arduino. Connect the SDA pin of the I2C module to the SDA pin of the LCD display, and connect the SCL pin of the I2C module to the SCL pin of the LCD display.

  2. Connect the potentiometer to the LCD display. Connect one end of the potentiometer to the VCC pin of the LCD display, and the other end to the GND pin. Connect the wiper pin of the potentiometer to the VO pin of the LCD display.

  3. Connect the I2C module to the Arduino. Connect the SDA pin of the I2C module to the A4 pin of the Arduino, and connect the SCL pin of the I2C module to the A5 pin of the Arduino.

  4. Connect the Arduino to power.

  5. Upload the LiquidCrystal_I2C library to the Arduino IDE. You can find this library on GitHub or through the library manager in the Arduino IDE.

  6. Write the code to interface the LCD with Arduino using the LiquidCrystal_I2C library.

example code:

arduino
#include <Wire.h> #include <LiquidCrystal_I2C.h> LiquidCrystal_I2C lcd(0x3F, 16, 2); // set the LCD address to 0x3F for a 16 chars and 2 line display void setup() { lcd.init(); // initialize the LCD lcd.backlight(); // turn on the backlight lcd.setCursor(0, 0); // set the cursor to the first column of the first row lcd.print("Hello, World!"); // print "Hello, World!" to the LCD } void loop() { // do nothing }
  1. Upload the code to the Arduino board.

  2. The LCD should display the message "Hello, World!".

That's it! You have successfully interfaced a 16*2 LCD with Arduino using I2C protocol. You can modify the code to display different messages or add more functionality to the project.
