Project 1 - Impact of Ball on Wall

Objective -

To prepare a model to check Deformations of an Aluminium Alloy plate (100X100X5 mm) when its hit by a steel ball weighing 4g at speed 50 m/s, 250 m/s and 500 m/s. Also determine the veloctity at which the plate will be ruptured.

Analysis Procedure - Explicit Dynamics on Ansys Workbench

Geometry -

Distance between outer face of plate and ball = 10 mm

Mesh -

Nodes = 13252 ( Linear First Order Hex Mesh)

Boundary Conditions -

Fixed Support applied on four faces ( Plate width)

Velocties applied - 50 m/s, 250 m/s, 500 m/s, 1250 m/s

Total Deformation Plots - Scaled

Velocity = 50 m/s

Conclusion - No considerable effect on plate.

Total Deformation on plate = 0.2 mm in X Direction,

Equivalent Strain on Plate = 0.1%

Total Deformation Plots - Scaled

Velocity = 250 m/s

Conclusion - Dent on plate where the ball hits.

Total Deformation on plate = 3.02 mm in X Direction,

Equivalent Strain on Plate = 0.27%

Total Deformation Plots - Scaled

Velocity = 500 m/s

Conclusion - Dent on plate where the ball hits.

Total Deformation on plate = 5.6 mm in X Direction,

Equivalent Strain on Plate = 0.64%

Total Deformation Plots - Scaled

Velocity = 1250 m/s (Ruptured Plate Case)

Conclusion - Hole in plate where the ball hits.

Total Deformation on plate = 35.715 mm in X Direction,

Equivalent Strain on Plate = 1.09%
