Project 1 - Analyzing the Education trends in Tamilnadu
Analyzing the Education trends in Tamilnadu
Abstract
The dashboard aims to help mission-driven organizations to utilize data visualization for social change by addressing the major gaps between men and women in STEM fields. The dataset included in the dashboard tracks the graduation rates of women in science and mathematics over the years, as well as the number of employed persons and STEM jobs by education level and salary comparison. The dashboard seeks to address the issue of women being tracked away from STEM fields throughout their education, limiting their training and opportunities as adults. By visualizing this data, the dashboard can help organizations identify and address disparities between men and women in STEM fields, with the ultimate goal of promoting greater gender equity and diversity in these critical fields.
-
Pie graph: The pie graph displays the percentage of women in four STEM fields - Biological Scientists, Chemists & Materials Scientists, Computer & Mathematical Occupations, and Engineers & Architects. After the graph, a sentence could be framed as follows: "The pie graph shows that women make up 46% of Biological Scientists, 40.4% of Chemists & Materials Scientists, 25.20% of Computer & Mathematical Occupations, and 16.50% of Engineers & Architects."
-
Trend graph: The trend graph displays the percentage of women graduating in Computer Science and Engineering from 2000-2015. After the graph, a sentence could be framed as follows: "The trend graph indicates that the percentage of women graduating in Computer Science and Engineering Decreased from 28% in 2000 to 18% in 2015."
-
Bar graph: The bar graph displays the percentage of women in STEM jobs by education in various fields. After the graph, a sentence could be framed as follows: "The bar graph shows that 80% of women with a master's degree and 45% Professional/Doctoral Degree are working in health-related jobs."
-
Cross tab: The cross tab displays the percentage of men and women working in related fields of their education. After the graph, two sentences could be framed as follows: "The cross tab indicates that 38% of women who majored in Computers are working in Computer-related jobs. Similarly, 24% of women who majored in Engineering are working in Engineering-related jobs."
-
Comparison graph: The comparison graph displays the All/Men/Women salaries by ethnicity. After the graph, a sentence could be framed as follows: "The comparison graph reveals that the salary of Asian women is 15300$ lower than Asian men."
Regarding the possible issues on the gender gap in STEM jobs, there could be several reasons for the disparity. Some possible reasons include a lack of encouragement or support for girls and women to pursue STEM education and careers, unconscious bias or stereotypes, workplace culture and discrimination, and a lack of work-life balance options. Addressing these issues through policy changes, education, and awareness-raising initiatives could help to reduce the gender gap in STEM jobs.
