Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench

REPORT ON SIMULATION OF FLOW BENCH USING SOLIDWORKS

Created by Shahbaaz Khan Deoda

28 June 2020

Aim: - Simulation of flow bench using solidworks for different valve lift and evaluate plot between mass flow rate and valve lift.

Cylinder dimensions: -

  • Bore diameter is 50mm.
  • Length of cylinder 100mm.
  • Intake manifold diameter is 25mm.

Boundary conditions: -

  • Inlet total pressure 500000[Pa] at temperature 293.2[K].
  • Outlet static pressure 101325[Pa] at temperature 293.2[K].

RESULTS: -

1.GRID DEPENDENCY TEST

2.VALVE LIFT PARAMETRIC STUDY

1.GRID DEPENDENCY TEST: -

Grid dependence test is also called as mesh dependence test, in the which the model is subjected to successive smaller cell sizes for calculations, that is the model is divided into a smaller number of parts called elements and calculations are made. As the element size decreases the error towards the results reduces. Now for the above 3D model, we run the simulation with 3 refining values. or a particular valve lift of 4mm.

Case 1: for refining values on x-axis = 14, y-axis = 14 and z-axis = 8

Case 2: for refining values on x-axis = 28, y-axis = 28 and z-axis = 16

Case 3: for refining values on x-axis = 56, y-axis = 56 and z-axis = 32

Mass flow rate for above three refinement cells for grid dependency test

design point 1 = first refinement

design point 2 = second refinement

design point 3 = third refinement

2.VALVE LIFT PARAMETRIC STUDY

EFFECT OF VALVE LIFT ON MASS FLOW RATE AND PRESSURE DROP: -

Plot for valve lift and mass flow rate: -

design point 1, valve lift = 0.001 meter

design point 2, valve lift = 0.002 meter

design point 3, valve lift = 0.003 meter

design point 4, valve lift = 0.004 meter

pressure plot at near the valve: - on the basics of that data we can chose best inlet port design amonthe the varios cross section area.

Case 1: valve lift 1 mm

pressure contour: -

velocity contour: -

Case 2: valve lift 2 mm

pressure contour: -

velocity contour: -

Case 3: valve lift 3 mm

pressure contour: -

velocity contour: -

Case 4: valve lift 4 mm

pressure contour: -
