Challenge

Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench

Objective-

  • Create a 3D model of a flow bench
  • Run a parametric study on different valve lift
  • Run flow analysis and obtaining a plot a graph between lift and mass flow rate

Introduction-

A flowbench is a device used for testing the internal aerodynamic qualities of an engine component. It is mainly used for testing the intake and exhaust ports of cylinder heads of internal combustion engine.

Procedure-

  • Make a circle and extruded it to make a cylinder.
  • Select top face of cylinder and make a circle and select right plane to make the profile of intake port, then using Swept Boss option to make it 3D.
  • Design the valve.
  • Using Shell command and select inlet and outlet faces and give a minimum thickness.

CAD model-

Cross sectional view-

Flow Simulation-

  • Create Lids to close the inlet and outlet faces.
  • Make internal analysis type and extruded cavities without flow conditions.
  • Select water a working fluid.
  • Adiabatic wall is selected as default wall thermal condition.
  • Value of temperature is 293.2 K

Boundary conditions-

  • Select total pressure at inlet and since there is pressurized fuel at inlet then give the value of pressure is 2 bar.
  • Select static pressure at outlet give the value of pressure is 1 bar (atmospheric pressure).
  • Make a cut plot and select velocity then we are able to see how fluid flows inside it.
  • Right click on Goals and select surface goals.
  • Then righ click on outlet face and select Led option.
  • Select mass flow rate.

Parametric study-

  • Right click on Project and select new parametric study
  • In Input variables: select the dimension of valve lift in add dimension parameter.
  • Then double click on discrete valve and select range with numbers and make total 7 vale lift position.
  • In Output parameter: select mass flow rate in add goals and select cut plot in add result.
  • Then run the parametric study.

Results of cut plot-

  • Design study 1 (when valve lift = 0.002 m)-
  • Design study 2 (when valve lift = 0.002133333 m)-
  • Design study 3 (when valve lift = 0.002266667 m)-
  • Design study 4 (when valve lift = 0.0024 m)-
  • Design study 5 (when valve lift = 0.002533333 m)-
  • Design study 6 (when valve lift = 0.002666667 m)-
  • Design study 7 (when valve lift = 0.0028 m)-

Result of mass flow rate at each valve lift-

Graph: mass flow rate vs valve lift-

  • Mass flow rate increases when valve lift increases.

Velocity-

Flow trajectory-

  • Click on flow trajectories
  • Select all faces where fluif flows and make number of points = 150 and select velocity
  • It shows the velocity profile.
