Modelling and simulation of flow through a flowbench

AIM: Internal flow analysis of Flow-bench sing Solidworks.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Create a 3D model of a flow bench.
  • Do Grid dependence test at particular valve lift.
  • Run parametric for obtain mass flow rate at different valve lift.
  • Plot graph of lift vs mass flow rate.

PROCEDURE

  1. We have to create 3D model of flow-bench in Solidworks.
  2. For flow simulation we need water-tight geometry, so we create lid at inlet port and lower face of cylinder.
  3. Now go to flow simulation and create the new wizard and give the inputs like analysis type internal flow and fluid is air.
  4. Then give the boundary conditions as total pressure 2 bar at end face of inlet port and give static pressure 1 bar at lower face of cylinder.
  5. I give the local mesh at the faces of valve with refinement level 3.
  6. Create cut-plot for velocity.
  7. Now for grid dependency we perform parametric study. In that give initial mesh level as input and cut-plot as output.
  8. Take 3 initial mesh condition and run the simulation.
  9. After analysis the result we choose the best result at mesh size 5.
  10. Now to see the effect of valve lift on mass flow rate, we do another parametric study at mesh size 5.
  11. Create the goal of mass flow rate at the lower face of cylinder.
  12. In that study, give the dimension of valve lift as input and velocity cut-plot and mass flow rate goal as output.
  13. I give 10 different valve lift value between 0.001-0.007 m.

Case 1: Mesh size 3

Case 2: Mesh size 4

Case 3: Mesh size 5

After analysis the cut-plot of different mesh size, we can say that the best result is obtained at mesh size 5.

VALVE LIFT VS MASS FLOW RATE GRAPH

CONCLUSION

  • As we increase mesh size, we get the better results.
  • As we increase Valve lift, mass flow rate increases. But the mass goes outside of the model we get the negative values of mass flow rate. So, negative sign indicates the mass flows outside the model.
