Project

MESHING A BACK WHEEL PANEL OF A CAR USING HYPERMESH

OBJECTIVE:

  • The main aim of this project is to mesh the back wheel panel of the car as per the quality criteria shown below.
  • To assign thickness for the mesh elements.

QUALITY CRITERIA:

PROCEDURE:

  • Selected the radioss user profile for durability analysis (say).
  • Imported the back wheel panel model (.hm) file into the hypermesh GUI.
  • Checked for any geometrical failure in the model as shown below, in order to attain good midsurface.
  • Cleared the necessary topological failures using the tool: geometry-->quick edit (or) key fn+f11, as shown below.
  • defeatured the unwanted surface fillets and edge fillets where the elements fail for minimum length after meshing.
  • MIDSURFACE EXTRACTION:
  • Here, the automatic midsurface extraction method is used.
  • The automatic extraction method is done by using the tools: geometry-->midsurface-->auto midsurface with extraction option as offset+planes+sweeps, since the extraction is good when compared with the other options.
  • Checked for the geometrical failures like free edges, surface duplicates, and irregular surfaces and cleared using quick edit panel, surface edit panel(shift+f9).
  • The surfaces are splitted and combined into one surface, in order to attain good mesh flow.
  • MESHING:
  • The midsurface is meshed surface by surface using the tool: 2D-->auto mesh panel with the mixed type and element size of 5mm.
  • The option tools-->check elements is used for the elements satisfaction to the given quality criteria.
  • Some unsatisfied elements are cleared by using the tool 2d-->quality index.
  • Some of them are cleared by the reverse masking technique and remeshing them.
  • The options like translate, project, element edit, node edit, replace also used for better feature capturing.
  • Checked for the presence of back to back trias, opposite trias, rotational quads, edge trias and cleared by remeshing the elements.
  • Checked for the presence of free edges between the elements and cleared by increasing the tolerance value and replace option.
  • The concentration of trias is greatly reduced using the option quality index-->cleanup tools-->drag tria element.
  • Finally, smoothing is done for the better mesh flow.
  • ASSIGNING THICKNESS:
  • The component is measured for the thickness value by using the option distance (f4).
  • The collector is created as per the uniform thickness value of 0.75mm and organized the components elements using the tool: tools-->organize (shift+f11).
  • The property is created with P1-shell as card image and respective thickness value.
  • Finally, assigned the property to the respective collector.
  • The tool-2D detailed element representation is used to view the assigned thickness.
  • Finally, saved the file.

RESULT:

Hence, the back wheel panel of the car is meshed as per the quality criteria and thickness is assigned to the 2D elements.
