MBD Simulation on IC Engine Valve Train
Aim:
- To Model the parts and assemble them in SolidWorks.
- To run the simulation using the below parameters.
Conditions:
Valvetrain:
A valvetrain or valve train is a mechanical system that controls the operation of the intake and exhaust valves in an internal combustion engine. The intake valves control the flow of air/fuel mixture (or air alone for direct-injected engines) into the combustion chamber, while the exhaust valves control the flow of spent exhaust gasses out of the combustion chamber once combustion is completed

Motion analysis:
- Establish contact between Cam and push rod, pushrod and rocker arm, rocker arm and valve.
- Give a rotary motion to the cam with 1500 RPM.
- Set up a linear spring between the valve and the valve stem(as seen in the assembly) with the spring stiffness of 10 [N/mm] and free length 45[mm].
- Change frames to 7200 frames per sec and use precise contact.
- Select the entire assembly and assign the material Carbon Steel.
- Select the required plots for results and analysis.
- Run the simulation for the required time.
Calculations:-
The distance between the centers is calculated and the cam is modified to get the required cam lift.
case 1:
Cam lift = 3.5mm
- R1= 17.5mm
- R2= 10mm
- L=3.5+R1-R2
- L=3.5+17.5-10 =11mm
Plots:
1.Contact Force between Cam and Pushrod:
2.Contact Force between Pushrod and Rocker arm
3.Contact Force between Rocker arm and valve:
4.Contact Force between Rocker arm and valve in X-Direction:
5.Linear displacement of the Pushrod:
6.Linear displacement of the valve:

case 2 :
Cam lift = 6mm
- R1= 17.5mm
- R2= 10mm
- L=6+R1-R2
- L=6+17.5-10 =13.5mm

Result:
Hence the modeling is done and the plots are made according to the two cases, then the parts are also uploaded in drive and video is also uploaded
