MBD Simulation on a Piston Assembly
Simulation of Piston assembly
Aim: To model parts of piston assembly and simulate the piston assembly in three condition.
Concept of piston assembly
The piston is a part of engines which reciprocate inside the engine to converts the reciprocating motion into rotatory motion.
The parts of the piston assembly contain a piston, a cylinder, a connecting rod and a crank in it.
The piston assembly is used in different sort of components dealing with like gas compressor, IC engines and pups and pneumatic cylinders.
In engines the work of the piston assembly is to transfer the force that which is produced due to the burn of fuel inside the cylinder to the rotating crank with the help o connecting rod and piston sings are provided inside in the piston which acts as a lock to restrict the gas inside the cylinder.
In Pump the work is exactly opposite in which the crank is rotated in with some external action and this produces compressed gases inside the cylinders with the help of the piston.

Objective
- Create the parts of the piston assembly like piston, connecting rod and Crank.
- The speed of the crank is set to 2,000 rpm and the frames are set to 7200 frames and the gravitational force to the x-axis.
- To conduct motion analysis in tree condition by offsetting the plane of the piston and the main plane.
- The condition is are to keep both the plane coincide, and to offset the plane by 10mm in both positive as well as in negative direction.
- To plot the graph to obtain linear displacement of the piston in each of the condition and combine all the three graphs to get a compression of all the three condition.
Body of content:
All the charts have been done for 0.20 sec with 12,000 fps
As we have to obtain frame for each degree for 2,000 rpm
Rpm for 1 sec = 2000/60 =33.33333
Frames per second = 360 * 33.333= 12000 fps
Plot of 0 mm offset
Plot of 10 mm positive offset
Plot of 10 mm negative offset
Compression chart
From the compression we can come to a point that both the ‘0’ mm as well as the ’10 mm’ negative offset are close to each other in linear displacement. (i.e.) in both the cases the piston travels at a particular vertical distance.
Conclusion:
The motion study of piston has been made and the linear displacement of the piston head for each degree of rotation of the crank is found out for each degree and the plots are compared.
