MBD Simulation on a Piston Assembly
AIM:
- To generate the 3D model of the crank,End cap,Connecting Rod,Wrist pin,Piston.
- To perform motion analysis and simulation on the following cases,
| Case | Condition |
| 1 | Wrist pin 0 mm offset |
| 2 | Wrist pin 10 mm postive offset |
| 3 | Wrist pin 10 mm negative offset |
- To generate the Linear displacement of the Piston Head plot in all the three cases.
- To export the graphs into Excel and then Superimpose all the three graphs into a single graph.
Piston Assembly :
Piston assembly consists of Crank ,Endcap,Connecting Rod,Wrist pin,Piston. It is part of IC engine assembly ,where it is used to convert the reciprocating motion to rotational motion .
Methodology :
3D Modelling :
Crank :
Sketch : Line , Circle
Features :Boss extrude ,Extrude cut,mirror,fillet
End Cap :
Sketch : Circle
Features :Boss extrude ,Extrude cut,fillet

Connecting Rod :
Sketch : line,Circle
Features :Boss extrude ,Extrude cut,fillet

Wrist pin :
Sketch : Circle
Features :Boss extrude, Chamfer
Piston :
Sketch : line,Circle
Features :Revolve,Cut revolve ,linear pattern, Cut extrude,Boss extrude, mirror, fillet
Assembly :
The components are assmebled in such a way that rotational motion is applicable in crank and vertical motion in piston head.

MOTION ANALYSIS :
In all the analysis use precise contact option with 2000 frames per second in the motion settings which will be used to view the motion at a viewable pace.

ANALYSIS 1 :
| CASE 1 | 0 mm Offset | Crank : 2000 rpm |
The linear displacement plot of the piston head :

ANALYSIS 2 :
| CASE 2 | 10 mm positive Offset | Crank : 2000 rpm |
The linear displacement plot of the piston head :

ANALYSIS 3 :
| CASE 3 | 10 mm negative Offset | Crank : 2000 rpm |
The linear displacement plot of the piston head :

RESULT & OBSERVATION :
By comparing all the three graphs , it clearly shows that the linear displacement of the piston increases as the offset increases from negative to positive . By viewing the superimposed graph the observation can be infered .
