Internal Geneva Mechanism
Aim: To obtain motion analysis for Internal Geneva Mechanism and plot Contact Force with time
Theory: The Geneva Mechanism is used to translate a continuous rotation movement into intermittent rotary motion.
The rotating drive wheel is equipped with a pin that reaches into a slot located in the driven wheel that advances it by one step at a time.
Here, the internal Geneva Mechanism with 4 slots (i.e. 90o lag) is observed.
The motion study is used to simulate CAD assemblies with realistic conditions and environments.
Motion Study Setup: The contact between two wheels is defined with material for both as Steel (Dry). The case is studied for two cases with constant RPM motor at 10 RPM and 20 RPM. The motor is placed at the center of the driving wheel.
Results: 1. Contact Force
a. Without Precise Contact
Maximum Force = 799 Newtons
b. With Precise Contact
Maximum Force = 969 Newtons
2. Angular Displacement
a. 10 RPM motor (60 fps)
b. 20 RPM motor (120 fps)
Conclusion:
The results obtained show a maximum contact force of 799 N and 969 N without precise contact and with precise contact respectively.
The driven wheel takes 15.65 seconds to rotate 360 degrees with a 10 RPM constant speed motor and 12.05 seconds with a 20 RPM constant speed motor.
