Challenge

Internal Geneva Mechanism

Geneva Mechanism Multi-Body Dynamics:

Various plots are obtained for the given challenge. First of all, the assembly was created for the driving wheel and the driven part. Animation videos and cad files are attached to the report.

(1). For 10 RPM and 60 Frames Per Second:

Angular velocity of driving wheel = 2*3.14*N/60

= 1.0467 rad/sec

= 60 deg/sec

The contact force between Driving Wheel and Driven part is plotted as (Non-Precise Contact):

The contact force reaches as high as 644N in a non-precise contact situation. A few peaks show that the contact force is significant at the sudden collisions of driven and driving components.

The angular displacement of the driven wheel is as follows:-

The above graph shows that the angular displacement of the driven wheel stops(remains constant) for a few seconds when the driving knob is not in contact with the driven component. And when it is in the slot, its angular displacement increases fastly.

Image of the selection of precise contact-

Precise Contact plots-

The maximum contact force is 5686 N in the precise contact case.

When the precise contact selection is applied, there is a significant increase in the contact force at the respective time instances, especially at the sudden contacts. Also, the time interval is precisely divided thus more values are obtained in an excel sheet.

(2). 20 RPM and 120 Frames per second:-

Angular velocity of the driving wheel= 2*3.14*20/60

= 2.0933

= 120 deg/sec

Contact force and angular displacement (driven wheel) plots (for non-precise contacts):-

For Precise contact:-

Angular Velocity of Driver component:-

The angular velocity of the driving component remains constant for constant rpm.

Result Summary:- Here we obtained three types of results.

Firstly, the contact force between the driving and driven component for precise and non-precise contacts separately. We conclude that the contact/reaction force in a precise contact type is way high than the non-precise contact.

Secondly, we obtained plots of angular displacements of the driven component. There is come horizontal line in the graph which shows no extra displacement when the driver component is not in the contact with driven component.

And lastly, we plotted a graph of the angular velocity of the driving wheel which remains constant for constant rpm.
