Hood design-Week 2

                                                                               Report

Hood - it is front opening panel which is used to cover the engine compartment but this is secondary. Primary function of hood is to reduce the force of impact during head to head to collision and reduce transfer of force towards passenger. Hood is defined in such a way that after imapact all the forces are defected away from passenger towards pillar of car. Also has a function to give access to engine during maintainance.

Latch (Stricker) - it is a locking mechanism for hood, while driving the vehicle the hood should not open that why lack is provided to hood and also to restrict unathorize access to engine.

Trajectory - It is an imaginary circle on which the hood is about to swing, trajectory also help in aligining the locking mechanism for hood.

Mastic data - it is positions for hot glue (also known as mastic) spots, provided on emboss for joining the outer and inner panel. Mastic resticts the resonance of outer panel while driving vehicle at high speed and also at bump, 80mm distance is maintained between two mastics points.

Emboss - it increases the cross section area of sheet without increasing its thickness, as strength can be achieved without additional thickness of sheet metal which drastically reduce weight of component. On emboss cutout is given to reduce its weight but also in case of padestrian accident cutout section provides empty space which cause less injury to pedestrian.

Hemming - it is a joining process of two sheetmetal where outer sheetmetal is folded over inner panel. This process is done as spotwelding or other process may cause damage to asthetic look on outer panel and hence hemming is done where joining needs to be done without destroying asthetic look.

Deep-drawing - it is a sheetmetal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radically drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch. The deep drawing process is, when the depth of drawn part exceeds its diameter then it is called as deep drawing. The deep drawing process is done by multiple series of dies.
