Hood design-Week 2
OBJECTIVE:
To create hood and its components for the given master section using NX-CAD considering the design considerations.
HOOD ASSEMBLY:
It consists of the following parts
- Hood inner panel
- Hood outer panel
- Hinge assembly
- Striker
- Reinforcement plates
DEEP DRAWING
Deep drawing is the process of converting blank of sheet metal into a cylindrical containers with a flat or hemispherical base.It is combination of metal forming process & sheet metal process. It basically consists of die, punch, blank holders. After the application of drawing force, the blank of material forms & takes shape of the punch or shape made onto the punch. To avoid frictional resistance between blank & die, the lubricant is used
Hood inner panel is made by this process.
HEMMING
Hemming is a forming operation in which the edges of the sheet are folded or folded over another part in order to achieve a tight fit. Normally hemming operations are used to connect parts together, to improve the appearance of a part and to reinforce part edges.
Using hemming process the hood outer and inner panel are joined together.
After hemming process, a selant is applied on the edges of the outer and inner panel to seal the gaps between them.
During the creation of inner panel there will be areas provided for placing the MASTICS
MASTICS - These are the parts that are used to strengthen the inner panel locally. When it is placed it provides strenthening aroung 80mm in diameter

HINGE AND STRIKER:
Another major consideration is postioning the striker assembly in the hood assemly. It depends on the distance from the hinge axis to the latch placed in the engine compartment and also the striker should be perpendicular to the trajectory at any point.
