Challenge

Frequency Analysis of a rotating shaft

Frequency Analysis on a Rotating Shaft

Aim

To design the rotating shaft on any desired dimensions and to perform frequency finite element analysis at the shaft to find out the critical and resonant frequencies.

Procedure

Design the rotating shaft with desired dimensions such as:

  • Diameter of disk = 100mm
  • Diameter of shaft = 30mm
  • Diameter of step = 15mm

Then extrude the sketch at desired dimensions and apply alloy steel material to the model. Start a new simulation study of frequency by providing bearing fixtures at both the end steps.

Then create a mesh for the model with fine meshing and run the study to obtain results of amplitude.

The mesh details are provided for detail study

Results

This is provided with five different modes each with different amplitude or natural frequency

Mode 1

Mode 2

Mode 3

Mode 4

Mode 5

Conclusion

From different amplitude analysis, we found that frequency varies for different mode shapes and amplitude is directly proportional to the frequency and the resonance.
