Challenge

Foundation Design using SAFE

Aim: Model the isolated footing from previous challenge in SAFE

Procedure:

1. Setup a new model and select the isolated footing according to IS 456:2000 using metric system

2. Define the materials

3. Define the slab properties

4. Define the soil subgrade properties using = Define>spring properties>area spring

5. Define the load cases and combination

6. Assign the following data

7. Analyze the model

8. Check the punching shear i.e it should be less than 1

9. Design the design strips

Result: With this part 1 is completed.

Aim: Model and design the pile cap using given data in SAFE

Data provided:

Axial load = 1175 kN

Length of pile = 16 m

Dia. of pile = 500 mm

Pile capacity = 200 kN

No. of piles = 1175/ 200 =5.875 =Assume 8 piles

Area of each pile = `pi *d^2/4` =196349.5 mm^2

E = 5000`sqrt Fck`= 25000

Spring constant = 306.79 kN/mm

Spacing of pile =1250, Edge spacing = 500 mm

Length = 5250mm, width = 2750 mm

Steps:

1. Open new project with IS456:200 recommendation

2. Define the materials

3. Define the slab

4. Define the soul subgrade

5. Define the load

6. Draw the piles

  • Using reference points, draw : piles, pilecap and column

7. Assign the following

8. Run the analysis

9. Check the punching shear

10. Draw the design strips

Result : All the following design is done with reference to IS 2911 and SP 34
