Flow over an airfoil
FLOW OVER AN AIRFOIL
AIM
The Main objective of this challenge is to perform the analysis of two dimensional flow over an National Advisory Committe of Aeronotics(NACA) Airfoil at various angle of attack
INTRODUCTION
The need for faster and smoother calculations of Flow Fields given the reason for rapid evolution of computational fluid dynamics. In the past decade, cfd was the method of choice in the design of many aerospace, automotive and industrial components and processes in which fluid or gas flows plays major role. The computer simulations show features and details that are difficult, expensive or visualize experimentally.
The first step in modelling a problem involves creation of geometry. The majority of the time spent in cfd problems was for the creation of geometry and meshes involved in it for the domain geometry that allows a comprimise between desired accuracy and solution cost. In this project we use solidworks flow simulation software to comapre the lift and drag force of a NACA Airfoil for the angle of attacks of 0,2,4,6,8,10.
PROCEDURE
- Open solidworks, open new part file and on the top of the screen select Insert through and import the geometry.
- Create solid body of the geometry with an angle of attack, open wizard tool
- On the first page of the wizard tool write the title of the project and do not change the default settings on the second page. In the third page, select external flow.
- In the next page select air as the fluid with laminar and turbulent flow and give the velocity of Air in x-direction as 600m/sec in the next page, then click ok
- After the flow study is generated, click on create local and select the top surface and click ok
- Select the global goals and click on force and frictional forces in the x,y direction
- Use the y-axis for Surface goal and click run
- After the results are generated, create the cut plot and goal plot as shown in the figures below
RESULTS
Angle of attack at 10 degrees
Angle of attack at 8 degrees
Angle of Attack at 6 degrees
Angle of Attack at 4 degrees
Angle of Attack at 2 degrees
Angle of Attack at 0 degrees
CONCLUSION
From the Above results it is evident that increase in angle of attack will also increase the lift and drag force.
