Flow over a cylinder
Aim
Aim of this challenge is to model a cylinder and Simulate the flow over a cylinder for the conditions of different Reynolds numbers after a baseline simulation is done.
Introduction
In this challenge, we are said to model a cylinder of a random dimension that is said in the video and a baseline simulation of any velocity of flow is done and then the results are used to edit the Reynolds number to different percents as mentioned in the challenge.
Basic theory on the simulation
SOLIDWORKS Flow Simulation is an intuitive Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solution embedded within SOLIDWORKS 3D CAD that enables you to quickly and easily simulate liquid and gas flow through and around your designs to calculate product performance and capabilities, this is the definition provided by Solidworks and to put it into simple words flow simulation is a tool that helps one to know the real-life flow values and also the path where and how one's fluid flows with given boundary condition so by which he can edit up to his wish and necessity.
Case setup
For this case setup, we are using the wizard to make it easy now in which the project name is given and secondly the units are made as default ones, now for the fluid air is chosen, and other parameters are left as default, except for the simulation end time which is calculated.
Initial and boundary conditions
There are no specific boundary conditions except for the velocity or Reynolds number is given as input
Plots and the contours
The below plots are obtained from the results of the simulation.
Baseline simulation
Velocity cut plot
This velocity plot contour is observed from the output of baseline simulation where we are able to see the wavy region very clearly.
pressure cut plot
20% of Reynolds number
Velocity cut plot
This velocity plot contour is observed from the output of 20% Reynolds number of baseline simulation where we are able to see the wavy region very clearly but there is an additional extension at the end which can be due to increased Reynolds number.
pressure cut plot
40% of Reynolds number
Velocity cut plot
This velocity plot contour is observed from the output of 40% Reynolds number of baseline simulation where we are able to see the wavy region very clearly but there is an additional extension at the end in the previous plot got disappeared in this contour.
pressure cut plot
100% of the Reynolds number
Velocity cut plot
This velocity plot contour is observed from the output of 100% Reynolds number of baseline simulation where we are able to note a good point, that is, there is no wavy region behind a certain length there only a straight flow of velocity without any disturbance.
pressure cut plot
Observation and the conclusion
The observations from the above plots and contour are stated below,
Firstly the Reynolds number is increased significantly when there is an increase in velocity.
Then we are clearly able to note that the flow is getting steady when the Reynolds number is increased in case of the velocity,
and in case of a pressure plot, we are able to see only the changes at the start of the contact part of the cylinder.
NOTE*
since there were nearly 400 results and related files for the simulation because of my errors and correction during simulation I couldn't attach those files for your reference. Still I request you to take this into count.Thank you.
