FLOW OVER A BICYCLE

DRAG FORCE AGAINST A CYCLIST

1.AIM:

To calculate drag force on a cyclist

2.INTRODUCTION:

When a body is in motion it is going to face a set of resistances which includes friction,gravitational force ,drag force and some other reactve forces . As previously mentioned ,drag force is one of the resistance forces that caused by motion of a body through a fluid such as water or air . In some cases it is also termed as air resistance or fluid resistance . It acts oppposite to the relative motion of any object with surrounding fluid.

The drag force F_d exerted on a body travelling through a fluid is given by F_d =rho*A*v.^2*c_d*0.5

typically the drag force depends on the properties of the fluid and on the size shape and speed of the object

where

F_d = drag force (in kg*m/s^2)

rho = density of fluid through which the body is moving (in kg/m^3)

v = velocity of the body relative to the fluid (m/s)

c_d = drag coefficient which can varry along with the speed of body (for fluidds like water and air it willbe 0.4 to 1.0) (unitless )

A = projected cross sectional area of the body perpendicular to the flow direction(m^2) i.e, perpendicular to v

3.PRINCIPLE :

As already mentioned the dragforce depends on velocity ,size and shape of the body. For respec-tive drag areas the drag force and velocity are going to be altered. Depending on the value of drag coefficient and drag force cyclist have to monitior kinetic energy. In order to perform motion, the cyclist has to overcome this dragforce . To overcome this drag force cyclists focuses in the major factors that affects drag force i.e, shape . Aerodynamically the cyclist is going to experiance several drag forces according to his position on bicycle as well . In Each and every position, frontal area or drag area is going to varry and different values of drag force are going to be existed. ( "This kind of analysis is majorly done by using CFD simulation techniques where we can explore different parameters regarding the drag force ") . Typically there are 15 cyclist positions which cyclists follows in general can be devided into 3 sets . Frontal area , drag coefficient and drag area for those major cyclist positions along with diagram are also given below .

Photographs, side views and perspective views of first, second and third set of cyclists positions and Frontal area is indicated below picture :-
