Motion analysis of Beam engine powered hack saw using solidworks
Aim:
- To design the beam engine powered hack saw.
- To perform the motion analysis in the assembly.
Objective:
The main objective of the project is to peform the motion analysis in the assembled part of the beam engine powered hack saw. Beam engine mechansim is used to perform the automated cutting process. Various parts involved in this assembly are designed with proper justifying dimensions and finally assembled them with correct mates. Motion analysis is carried out to check how the blade reacts where output of the mechcanism is obtained.Solidworks is used for design the 3d models and its motion anlysis package is used for analysing the assembled part.
Introduction:
Beam engine:
A beam engine is a type of steam engine where a pivoted overhead beam is used to apply the force from a vertical piston to a vertical connecting rod. This configuration, with the engine directly driving a pump, was first used by Thomas Newcomen around 1705 to remove water from mines in Cornwall . The efficiency of the engines was improved by engineers including James Watt who added a separate condenser, Jonathan Hornblower and Arthur Woolf who compounded the cylinders, and William McNaught (Glasgow) who devised a method of compounding an existing engine. Beam engines were first used to pump water out of mines or into canals, but could be used to pump water to supplement the flow for a waterwheel powering a mill .
Circular saw:
A circular saw is a power-saw using a toothed or abrasive disc or blade to cut different materials using a rotary motion spinning around an arbor. A hole saw and ring saw also use a rotary motion but are different from a circular saw. Circular saws may also be loosely used for the blade itself. Circular saws were invented in the late 18th century and were in common use in sawmills in the United States by the middle of the 19th century.
A circular saw is a tool for cutting many materials such as wood, masonry, plastic, or metal and may be hand-held or mounted to a machine. In woodworking the term "circular saw" refers specifically to the hand-held type and the table saw and chop saw are other common forms of circular saws. "Skilsaw" and "Skil saw" have become generic trademarks for conventional hand-held circular saws. Circular saw blades are specially designed for each particular material they are intended to cut and in cutting wood are specifically designed for making rip-cuts, cross-cuts, or a combination of both. Circular saws are commonly powered by electricity, but may be powered by a gasoline engine or a hydraulic motor which allows it to be fastened to heavy equipment, eliminating the need for a separate energy source.
Working:
- The crank will rotates with the help of motor.
- The coupler connects the rotating cranank and the lever one end.
- The mtion translates from one end of the lever to the other end having another coupler which connects to the blade.
- Thus the rotatry movement is finally converted into linear reciprocating motion.
- These motion is used for cutting with the help of the blade.
- Below the blade there is spring attached table which will continously pull the object needs to cut towards the blade.

Experimental setup:
- All the required parts are modeled with proper dimension so that the mechansim works perfectly.
- Assembly is carried out.
- To ensure that the mechanism works perfect interfecrence detection and collision detection is carried out which states the mechanism works without any collision and interference.
- the motion is allowed un at 100 rpm.
- And the motion analysis graphs are plotted.
Motion Analysis:
Speed of the motor = 100 rpm
Frames per second = 500
Precise contact is switched on.
Acceleration is analysied in the blade and the obtained plot is of follow:
From the plot, the acceleration varies when the blade rotates. The vaious position of the joint in the blade where the peak in the plots occurs are:
The maximum acceleration noted is 210.12mm/sec**2
Angular velocity plot:
There 2 peaks obtained in the plot
Peak 1 (highest peak in the plot) is 380.26 deg/sec which occurs when the slider moves forward.
Peak 2 (adjacent peak to the highest peak) is 330.81 deg/sec which occurs when the slider moves backward.
Angular acceleration plot of the blade:
Contact force plot obtained between the blade and the slider.
Results:
- The working setup is seems to be working perfect and the various parameters in the cutting blade is analysed.
- Angular acceleration, Angular velocity and acceleration plots are displayed where from teh plots it is clear that the parameters varies when the slider moves forward and the slider moves backward.
- But in both the conditions of the slider the blade will do the cutting operation.
