FINAL INDEPENDENT PROJECT
Objective:
The aim of the project is to simulate a pipe flow simulation with an inlet Reynolds number of 100,1000 and 10,000.
Then place a line probes at 95%, 90% and 85% of the pipe length to compare the velocity at each location for three cases.
Condition:
At the outlet, pressure and temperature are 101325 Pa, 293.2K.
At the inlet, velocity will vary for three cases.
The working fluid is air.
Calculation:
To find the velocity of the flow:
Properties of air at atmospheric pressure:
Using Reynold's number formula and using the value from the above chart at atmospheric pressure and 20 degree Celsius, the velocity at three different cases are 0.08395 m/s, 0.8395 m/s and 8.395 m/s.
Procedure:
Create a new part model.
Make a circle of 20mm diameter and extrude it to 500 mm to make a cylinder.
Select shell, then select both face side of the cylinder and 1mm as thickness. Hence making a pipe of 1mm thickness.
Create new sketch along the length of the pipe and create a vertical line at 85% of the length and similarly for 90% and 95% of the length.
Go to Flow Simulation, and select Crete lid command and select end faces of the pipe to make a closed airtight volume for CFD simulation.
Click on New in flow simulation toolbar. Right click on input data on flow simulation tree, and select general setting.
In Fluids, Select air in gas as project fluid, flow type as Laminar for first two cases and turbulent for third cases and in Initial Conditions pressure as 101325Pa, Temperature as 293.2K and velocity as 0m/s.
Right click on boundary conditions and select insert boundary conditions. The first boundary condition for out-flow, select static pressure of 101325Pa.
The boundary condition for inflow is the three inlet velocity at three different cases on another end of the pipe. The last boundary condition for Wall is the Real wall and select the inner wall of the pipe.
Right click on Global Mesh and select edit definitions, change mesh manually, in X-direction 20, in Y-direction 20, in Z-direction 100.
Right click on XY plot for velocity in normal to the plane direction (Z-direction) and select insert then select the 85% line sketch. Similarly, make XY plot for 90% and 95%. Run
Right click on Project name and select new parametric study. Then select inlet velocity in input variables tab, select all XY plots. Go to scenario tab and select Design point 1 and copy paste it two more times. Change inlet velocity in design point 2 and 3 with 0.8395 and 8.395 m/s.
Run.
Results:
Case 1: When Reynold's number is 100.
Case 2: When Reynold's number is 1000.
Case 3: When Reynold's number is 10000.
