Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Aim: Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Fender:

• It is a BIW sheetmetal Closure Component in car. It prevents from splashing sand, mud, rocks, liquid & other foreign object spray from being thrown into air by tire. These may get splashed into car or it can hurt pedestrians. To avoid these things fenders are used.
• It also gives a aesthitic look.

Different types of wheel guard requirement for Fender:

1. Europe standard.
2. Japan Standard.
3. US Standard.

Europe Standard:

1. At all five sections the clearance value should be greater than 10 mm.
2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 10 mm at a line 30˚ forward and 50˚rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

Japan Standard:

1. Clearance must be greater than 5 mm in all the three positions.
2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30˚ forward and 50˚ rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

Europe Standard:

1. At all five sections the clearance value should be greater than 10 mm.
2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 10 mm at a line 30˚ forward and 50˚rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

Us Standard:

1. All values should be greater than 5 mm.
2. Wheel guard requirement: The value of ‘a’ shall be more than 5 mm 30˚ forward and 50˚ rearward from the central vertical axis of wheel.

Wheel Arch Calculation:

This calculation will be done using European standards as per the instruction in the challenge to be followed.

Obtaining the clearance value at section SB, SC, SD and SE :

Conclusion:

The above method and measuremnts follows the Europe standard. And in it SB at 30 deg only get passed, all other got failed. So this design didn't satisfy the Europe standard. Hence, the Clasa A design should have to change by Class A engineer.
