Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER
- The Fender is a part of the vehicle that frames a wheel. The fender consists of 5 mounting parts are drip mounting, A pillar, Sill, Cowl, and Drip.
Functionality of Fender
-Its primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks liquids, and other road spray from being thrown into the air by the rotating air.
- The moving vehicle tyres pick up stones and others and hurl them in all directions. Therefore, fenders are provided to prevent any injuries to pedestrians and contain the motion of these particles.
Fender Wheel Arch
- The fender forms a wheel arch or wheel well surrounding the tire and is not visible from above the car body.
- Wheel arch tend to be much larger than the diameter of the tire, because they do not move with the tire, and provide full movement of tire without touching the interior of the wheel arch.
- The fender wheel arch design is taken into consideration for safety rating. Hence the design fender wheel arch is evaulated based on certain criteria or rules that are laid by NCAP organizations. The designed fender wheel arch must be according to rules laid.

Fender Wheel Arch Requirements By Different Organization
EUROPEAN NCAP REGULATION REQUIREMENT
- The horizontal clearence (L) between the tyre and fender wheel arch must be greater than 10mm at different sections (SA, SB, SC, SD, SE).
- The vertical clearence (a) shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel at SB and SC.
- The below images shows the rules laid for meausring fender wheel arch and the following clearence shall be achieved for safety standards.

US NCAP REGULATION REQUIREMENT
- The horizontal clearence (L) between the tyre and fender wheel arch must be greater than 5mm on all positions from -100 & 100.
- The vertical clearence (a) shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.
- The below images shows the rules laid for meausring fender wheel arch and the following clearence shall be achieved for safety standards.

JAPAN NCAP REGULATION REQUIREMENT
- The horizontal clearence (L) between the tyre and fender wheel arch must be greater than 5mm at all three positions.
- The vertical clearence (a) shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearward from the central vertical axis of axis of wheel.
- The below images shows the rules laid for meausring fender wheel arch and the following clearence shall be achieved for safety standards.

Objective :
To calculate the fender wheel arch at required points for given class A surface and check whether the car passes the European standards.

Tabulation:
| WHEEL ARCH AREA CALCULATION AS PER EUROPEAN NCAP STANDARDS | ||||
| S.No | Section | Measured Clearence (L) | Acceptable Clearence | Approved (Yes/No) |
| 1 | SA | 9.948 | >= 10mm | No |
| 2 | SB | 10 | >= 10mm | Yes |
| 3 | SC | -0.1137 | >= 10mm | No |
| 4 | SD | -2.8758 | >= 10mm | No |
| 5 | SE | -5.9755 | >= 10mm | No |
Conclusion:
The Class A Surface requires to modified as the clearence at sections SA, SC, SD, and SE doesn't meet the acceptable clearence according to European standard.
