Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

Aim

Calculate the Wheel Arch gap at required points and check whether the car passes the European standard.

Wheel Arch is the semi-circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicle. The design of Wheel arch of a fender should be such that it must shield wheels and protect both passengers' compartment and pedestrians from projection of water, mud and stones. The wheel Arch area of the fender is usually designed as a cover or sheild over the tyre along its perimeter to stop any debris or stones, dirt, sand, snow etc. from getting thrown into the vehicle/ BIW area as well as outside the vehicle and onto other vehicles or pedestrians on the road. For the vehicle to has its use permit in different countries, the wheel arch of fenders must be compliant with the standards and regulations set by the respective countries.

European Standard Requirements

  1. Measure CL L at section SA-SA SB-Sb SC-SC SD-SD SE-SE and produce CL Check Chart
  2. All 5 section the CL L value should be greater than 10mm to satisfy european regulation
  3. Wheel guard requirement- The value of "a" shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30* forward and 50* rearward from the central vertical axis of the wheel

Attachedd table represents the CL L value at various sections to analyze the design satisfy the European Standard for fender design

Section Name Measured Result Image for reference European Standard (L>10mm)
SB-SB 10 mm Satisfied the criteria at SB
SA-SA 9.94 mm Not Satisfied
SC-SC -0.1139 Not Satisfied (Position of the wheel should be inside the fender) It is outside
SD-SD 2.8875 mm Not Satisfied
SE-SE 5.9973 Not Satisfied

Wheel Guard Requirement

"a"

27.8310 Satisy the condition the minimum length should be greater than the 10mm.

Conclusion

From the above results, we can conclude that the given fender design does not pass the European standards for wheel arch area the fender need to be redesigned in order to pass the european standard and go into the production.
