Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge

REPORT
FENDER REGULATIONS

What is Fender?
A fender is the curved portion of the car's body that sits over and houses the wheels.

What Is The Purpose Of A Fender On A Car?
The purpose of a fender is pretty simple. Its purpose is to keep mud, rocks, and other road debris from being thrown around by the tires. In other words, the fender is a housing for the wheels that keeps road debris contained. If there was nothing covering the wheels, all kinds of debris would be kicked up by the rotating tires. The fender not only protects your car from sustaining damage from road debris but it prevents this debris from being thrown up at other vehicles on the road. This is why vehicles with large, oversized tires are often required by law to install fender flares.

Vehicle Regulations regarding FENDER.
While designing the Fender in vehicle we have to take into consideration some regulation design by transport ministry for their country. The main Regulation is about the GAP between Wheel Arch Area and the Wheel. We will see that regulations by zone wise as below.

1) Japan Requirements
As per the Japan Standards the clearance value i.e. the Gap between Fender Wheel Arch and The Fender should be greater than 5mm at all 3 points i.e. SA,SB,SC.

L = Gap between Fender Wheel Arch and The Fender

2) European Requirements
As per the Japan Standards the clearance value i.e. the Gap between Fender Wheel Arch and The Fender should be greater than 10mm at all 5 points i.e. SA,SB,SC,SD,SE.

L = Gap between Fender Wheel Arch and The Fender

3) US Requirements
As per the Japan Standards the clearance value i.e. the Gap between Fender Wheel Arch and The Fender should be greater than 5mm At each 10degree from -100degree to 180degree.

*Above information is all about Regulations. Now we will see the challenge

Below case study is for European Standards

L = Gap between Fender Wheel Arch and The Fender

For European standards L should be greater than 10mm.

Measured values from the Input data as below

Section Distance (L) mm
A-A (SA) -0.2 (FAIL)
B-B (SB) 10 (PASS)
C-C (SC) 10 (PASS)
D-D (SD) -6 (FAIL)
E-E (SE) -3 (FAIL)

Images at each c/s
(Note- At c/s A-A, D-D, E-E Wheel outer edge is outside the Fender wheel house edge thats why i mentioned values in table -ve)

Conclusion-
Only at c/s B-B(SB) and C-C(SC) the fender styling data passed, but at c/s A-A(SA), D-D(SD) and E-E(SE) it failed. So now we have to discuss with styling team to change the styling data or also we can give proposal of design from our side to meet the European Standards. Hence the given Styling Fender doesnt pass the European standards and need to be modify.
