Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
CHALLENGE #4
REPORT - WHEEL ARCH AREA & ITS CALCULATION.
OBJECTIVE - The objective of this challange is to calculate wheel arch and to prove whether the given fender of the car will pass the European standards or not.
WHEEL ARCH -
- Wheel Arch is the semi circular part of the fender positioned above the wheel of the vehicles.
- The design of a Wheel arch of a fender is such that it must sheild wheel and protect both the passenger compartment as weel as pedestrian from projection of water, dust, mud and stones.
- To use wheel arch of fender in any country, it shuold have to follow the Standards and Regilation of that particular country.
EUROPIAN STANDARD FOR WHEEL ARCHS -
1. The clerance "L" shown in the figure at all the five sections i.e, SA-SA, SB-SB, SC-SC, SD-SD, SE-SE should be greater than 10 mm.
2. Wheel Guard Requirement : The value of (a) shall be more than 5 mm at a line 30 degree forward and 50 degree rearword from central vertcal axis of wheel.
CALCULATING "L"
Sketch is drawn as per the European Standards and Regulation and projected on the wheel arch at different sections to measure "L".
OBTAINING THE VALUE OF "L"
1. At section SB-SB
The value of L = 10.000mm
2. At section SA-SA
The value of L = 9.9490mm
3. At section SC-SC
The value of L = -0.1139mm
4. At section SD-SD
The value of L = -5.1105mm
5. At section SE-SE
The value of L = -11.0872mm

From the givwn table, the Fender does not pass the European Standards Regulations for Wheel arch area.
OBTAINING THE VALUE OF "a"
1. Finding the value of "a" at line 30 degree forward from the Central vertical axis of the wheel
The value of a = 43.9119 mm
2. Finding the value of "a" at line 50 degree rearward from the Central vertical axis of the wheel
The value of a = 38.6342 mm

From the given table Fender pass the European standard & Regulation at clearance "a".
CONCLUSION -
From the above results obatined, we can conclude that the Fender does not pass the European standard Regulation for Wheel Arch Area.
