Fender Design - Wheel Arch Challenge
FENDER DESIGN- WHEEL ARCH CHALLANGE
AIM:
Calculate the Wheel Arc Gap at a required point and check whether the car passes the european standard.
WHEEL ARCH:
The Wheel Arch is a semicircular part positioned above the wheel of the vehicle.
The most important body changes was the front wheel arch was cut higher into fender.
Corrosion has occured around the splash plate of the wheel arch.
The car was, large in size high definition headlights tha extend the wheel arch.

FENDER:
It is the US English terms for the part of an automobile part that frames a wheel well.
It primary purpose is to prevent sand, mud, rocks, liquid, and other road sprays from being thrown into the air by the rotating tyre.
MATERIAL USED:
The most commonly used wheel well are of plastic material. In the olden days, the inner fender or wheel well was made of sheet metal. If the vehicle with metal inner fender is used there is a good chance that winter salt and moisture have caused them to develop some rust in hard to spot areas. Improper repairs after an accident can also be accelerate corrosion from here as well.
FENDER SAFETY:
The fender is the part of the car, it is also used to protect the side of an engine component.
It is also considered while designing the wheel arch an fender since the debris in the wheel should not hit them in the motion of the car.
Fender is also reduced pedestrain injury where there is throwing up of debris nearby vehicle.
JAPAN REQUIREMENTS OF FENDER WHEEL ARC:

Measure Clearance L of tyre, hub, cap and fender in three different position of within area K and produce area clearance check chart to validate.
Clearance must be greater than 5mm in all three position.
Wheel guard reqirement, the value shall be the more than 5mm at a line of 30° forward and 50° backward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
US STANDARD REGULATION OF WHEEL ARCH:

Make clearance check details from all position from -100° to 100° and make clearance table.
All values should be greater than 5mm to satisfy the regulation.
The value of a shall be more than 5mm of a line 30° forward and 50° backward of the central vertical axis of the wheel.
EUROPEAN REGULATION OF A WHEEL ARCH:

Measure the CL L at section SA-SA-SB-SB-SC-SC-SD-SD-SE-SE and produce a CL check chart to validate.
In all five section, the CL L value should be greater than 10mm from safety European regulations.
Wheel Guard requirements, the value of a shall be more than 5mm at a line of 30° forward and 50° backward from the central vertical axis of the wheel.
PROCEDURE:
According to european standard, the design fender and wheel arc should be pass the wheel guard reqirements procedure.
To start the test, first create the plane, with the face of wheel arc.
Then sketch using along with the given dimensions as SA,SB,SC,SD and SE.
After sketching project the intersection point onto the fender face.
Then use the measuring tool and measure the clearance between the sketch lines and wheel arc.

The clearance between the SA line and the wheel arc is 9.949mm and also the line SA lies outside the fender so it is negative value

The Clearance between SB line and wheel arc is 10mm also the line lies inside the fender so it is positive value.

The clearance between the line SC and wheel arc is 0.111mm also the line lies outside the fender so it is negative value.
The clearance between the line SD and wheel arc is 2.812mm.
The clearance between the line SE and wheel arc is 5.827mm.
TABLE of Calculated Values.
| REGION | RESEQ-CLEARANCE | ACTUAL CLEARANCE | RESULT |
| SA | 10 | 9.949 | FAIL |
| SB | 10 | 10 | PASS |
| SC | 10 | 0.111 | FAIL |
| SD | 10 | 2.813 | FAIL |
| SE | 10 | 5.827 | FAIL |
CONCLUSION:
From the above result, we can conclude that the fender does not pass the european regulations, as the minimum clearance, L between the fender wheel arch and wheel for vehicle and pedestrain safety is 10mm and this design does not meet the requirement.
