DESIGN, MODELLING, ASSEMBLY & RENDERING OF YACHT USING SOLIDWORKS

Aim:

To design and model a Yacht by creating multiple 2D sketches, converting them into 3D models, assembling those individual components and to provide a final render to the model.

Introduction:

Yacht is a power vessel with desirable aesthetical qualities used for cruising and racing.

Methodology:

A cluster of functional components are set up in Yacht such as Hull, Superstructure, Radar, Radar Mast, Front seat, Middle Seat, Rear Seat and Garage Door. These components were dimensionally modelled by part modelling.

The various set of commands/features used to model Yacht are as follows:

  • 2D Drawings were sketched in different axes with commands like Line, Spline, Arc, Slot, Rectangle.
  • TRIM ENTITY - Used to trim any extension.
  • CONVERT ENTITY - Used to overwrite/trace a sketch on another plane.
  • OFFSSET ENTITY - Used to create an offset sketch with a chosen distance and direction.
  • BOSS EXTRUDE - It extrudes a sketch or a contour in one or two directions to create a solid model.
  • CUT EXTRUDE - It etches a required amount of region from the 3D model. For instance, if a hole or channel needs to be created on the body, Cut Extrude can etch out the area between hole walls.
  • REVOLVED BOSS - It revolves a sketch or a contour around an axis to create a solid model.
  • REVOLVED CUT - It etches out the required region by revolving around an axis.
  • SWEPT BOSS - It sweeps a closed profile along a path of certain direction to create a solid model.
  • LOFT - It creates a shape by making transitions between multiple profiles and guide curves thus allowing to create complex geometry with a single tool.
  • DOME - It is a rounded vault forming the outside face of a body or structure.
  • COMBINE - Used to combine two or more solid bodies together.
  • FILLET - Used to create a tangent arc between two adjacent faces.
  • CHAMFER - Provides an inclination upto certain distance between two faces.
  • SURFACE EXTRUDE - It extrudes the edges of a face of a solid body in a customised direction.
  • EXTEND SURFACE - It extends the edges of a surface with tangency.
  • RULED SURFACE - It creates a ruled surface from selected edges.
  • SURFACE FILL - It fills in surface within a closed boundary by the selection of guide curves.
  • LOFTED SURFACE - It creates a lofted surface between two or more profiles.
  • OFFSET SURFACE - It creates a surface in compliance with the profile selection.
  • SWEEP SURFACE - It creates a surface by sweeping an open or closed surface along an open or closed path.
  • TRIM SURFACE - It trims the surface selection considering cutting edge as a trim tool.
  • SURFACE KNIT - It combines two or more adjacent surfaces together.
  • SHELL - It etches out material from a solid body resulting in a thin feature.
  • MIRROR - It mirrors faces, features and bodies along a face or a plane.
  • SPLIT LINE - It projects a sketch on a curved face.
  • LENIAR PATTERN - It patterns a feature, face or body in one or more leniar direction.
  • CIRCULAR PATTERN - It patterns a feature, face or body around an axis.
  • PROJECTED CURVE - It creates a combine curve in compliance to curves sketched in two different planes. Most commonly used feature to create any desired contour.

Here are the individual components used to fabricate the Yacht:

  1. PROPELLER – A propeller is a rotary device driven by power generation from engine. It propels the yacht in chosen direction. Features used: Revolve, Loft, Cut Extrude, Circular Pattern, Fillet.
  1. RADAR – Radar is a safety component that detects the presence of other ships and obstacles and for navigation purpose. This is an electronic instrument that uses rotating antenna to sweep a narrow beam of microwaves around the water surface, detects targets and displays on screen. Features used: Boss Extrude, Cut Extrude, Sketch Pattern, Mirror, Fillet, and Split line.
  1. SUPERSTRUCTURE – Superstructure is the luxury factor in the Yacht. It mainly provides a viewer perspective when we are in steering control. It also consists of a watercraft. Modelling of Superstructure is the real challenge where we come across many complex curvatures and surface commands. Features used: Surface Loft, Surface Fill, Ruled Surface, Extend Surface, Extrude Surface, Surface Trim, Knit Surface, Offset Surface, Mirror, Fillet and Chamfer.

  1. HULL – Hull is the integral part of the Yacht where it acts as a support system. Atop sists the Superstructure and mast. The contact line which meets the water surface is called waterline. Both surface and solid modelling features were used to model the Hull.

  1. FRONT SEAT – Front seat is the passenger seat. This is positioned in font of the Superstructure. Features used: Surface Loft, Surface Sweep, Surface Extrude, Surface Extrude, Surface Fill, Surface Trim, Knit Surfaces, Boss Extrude, Revolve, Mirror, Fillet, Chamfer and Dome.

  1. MIDDLE SEAT – Similarly Middle seat is a passenger seat positioned behind the Superstructure. All the Surface modelling features were used.
  1. REAR SEAT – Similarly it is a passenger seat with a different aesthetical and structural variation. It is positioned at the extreme end of the Hull. All the solid modelling features were used.

  1. GARAGE DOOR – Garage door is a door which opens and closes for a vehicle entry or exit. Features used: Cut Extrude, Shell, Mirror and Fillet.

  1. RADAR MAST – A radar mast is a hollow metal structure with Antenna and Horns positioned atop Superstructure. Features used: Boss Extrude, Cut Extrude, Revolve, Sweep, Mirror, Dome, Fillet and Chamfer.

Finally, all these components are assembled using suitable mates.

RESULT – All the components of Yacht are assembled and rendered to give a realistic view using SolidWorks and Photoview-360 respectively.
