Conjugate Heat Transfer Analysis on a graphics card.

Aim: To study the temperature variation in the graphic processor using the conjugate heat transfer method under steady-state condition.

Introduction:

Conjugate Heat Transfer (CHT) is used to describe processes that involve variations of temperature within solids and fluids, due to thermal interaction between the solids and fluids. The exchange of thermal energy between the two physical bodies is called the study of Heat Transfer, the rate of transferred heat is directly proportional to the temperature difference between the bodies.

Model Geometry:

Material Property:

Mesh:

Model is meshed using default mesh settings.

Boundary Condition:

Power consumed by the processor (Assumed): 1.28 W

Heat generated by the processor: 2e7 W/m^3

Inlet Temperature: 300K

Inlet Velocity of Air:

                  Case 1: 1m/s

                  Case 2: 3m/s

                  Case 3: 5m/s

Solution Setup:

Steady State Condition

Viscous Model: K-Epsilon Realizable Model

Maximum Temperature of Processor:

Contour Plots showing the temperature varying across the fin surface as air passes.

 Heat Transfer Coefficient Plot:

Contour Plot gives the maximum Heat Transfer Coefficient of the Processor

Maximum Processor Temperature:

Contour Plot shows the maximum temperature of the Processor when airflow is at 1m/s.

Convergence Plot:

Conclusion:

1. The temperature contour for three different velocities 1m/s, 3m/s, and 5m/s clearly shows the rate of heat convection increases with increase in velocity of the fluid medium which results in a temperature decrease.

2. The maximum temperature at the processor is 331K and the heat transfer coefficient at the processor is 1162 W/m^2 K .

3. In all three cases, the result starts converging at 140th iteration.

4. The processor is the potential hotspot because it is the only heat source for the system.
