Project

Comparison Of Beams Using SolidWorks

Aim:

The aim of this experiment is to compare the different properties of the three types of Beams namely Rectangular Cross Section, I section, and C section by Finite Element Method.

Introduction:

Bending of Beams is a frequently encountered loading situation in practicse. A slender member subjected to transverse loads is termed as a beam under bending.

Pure Bending refers to flexure of a beam under a constant Bending Moment. Therefore pure bending occurs only in regions of a beam where the shear force is zero.

At any cross section, the traverse loads generate shear and bending moment to maintain equillibrium. The Bending causes a change in curvature of the beam and induces tensile and compressive stresses in the cross section of the beam. Maximum stresses are achieved in layers furthest from the neural axis, the layer at which strain is zero.

Procedure:

1. The 3D model is created from the provided drawing in SolidWorks

2. The Fixture and the material is defined for the analysis

3. A Basic Meshing is performed

4. A force of 1500 N is applied Vertically Downward.

5. The Analysis is performed and the results are obtained.

For Rectangular Cross Section:

Dimension:

3D moel of Rectangular Cross Section :

Results Obtained:

Max Von Mises Stress: 8.119e+06 N/m^2

Yield Strength: 6.204e+08 N/m^2

Max Displacement: 3.102e-02 mm

For I Section:

Dimension:

3D Model of I Section Created:

Results Obtained:

Max Von Mises Stress: 2.366e+07 N/m^2

Yield Strength: 6.204e+08 N/m^2

Max Displacement: 8.569e-02 mm

For C Section:

Dimensions:

3D Model Created:

Results Obtained:

Max Von Mises Stress: 4.495e+07 N/m^2

Yield Strength: 6.204e+08 N/m^2

Max Displacement:3.030e-01 mm

Conclusion from the Analysis:

By Comparing the three Sections the obtained results are:

1. Rectangular Section has a higher Mass and is Bulky adding to the cost also.

2. I Section is best among the three options as it has the optimum Mass, Stress Capacity and FOS and also has Higher Modulus Of Rigidity.

3. C Section could be considered as a option but it undergoes a torsion which is Undisirable.
