Challenge

Challenge 9 : Project : Technical Surfacing Kia Sportage

Technical Surfacing of KIA Sportage.

Objective-

To model KIA Sportage using Autodesk Alias with class-A surfaces.

Introduction –

Concept modelling helps us conceptualize and represent a two-dimensional representative sketch into three-dimensional figure. Class A surfacing in automotive design language refers to all the surfaces of the exterior and interior alike. CAS modelling is where the design starts to take shape.

Tools used –

CV Curve- This tool is used to draw a desired shape. This tool involves the use of multiple CV (Control vertices) that can be placed along a curve to get the desired shape.

Blend – Blend is used to join two curves.

Move – This tool can be used to move the curve or to move the CVs to get the desired shape of the curve.

Snap – This tool is used to snap a new curve to an already existing curve.

Pick – This tool is used to pick a curve/object/CV to perform any operation.

Layer- Different curves/surfaces can be assigned to a layer so that they can be toggled on if and only when it has to be worked on. It is really helpful to keep unnecessary curves away from the workspace.

Surfaces – Surfaces like Skin, Rail and square are mostly used to build the surfaces. Free form blend is also used to build a surface between two curves.

Trim – This tool can be used to remove or divide a section by projecting a curve onto a surface.

Conclusion-

This exercise helped us familiarize ourselves with class A surfacing tools while designing KIA Sportage. This assignment helped in learning how to build continuous smooth surfaces in Autodesk Alias.
