Centrifugal pump design and analysis
Centrifugal pump Design and analysis
Aim: To Design a Centrifugal Pump and to simulation the model to obtain the Pressure ratio and Mass flow rate.
Centrifugal Pump: centrifugal pump are pumps that which are used to convert rotating kinetic energy of the impellers to Hydrodynamic energy force that which is used to suck fluids through impeller and transfer in with elevated pressure. In the centrifugal pump the outlet pipe it will have an increasing area that which is responsible for the water to flow from the rotating area to the outlet pipe.
When the impellers start to rotate a vacuum is created at the center of the impeller and pipe connected to the center of the impeller sucks the water from the other end by which the water flow through the impeller gaps. Due to the rotation of the impeller a centrifugal for is created in the water that forces the water to mover outwards from the rotation, the increasing area in the path of the rotational flow takes the water getting forced outwards and thus the water gets out at the outlet pipe with an increased pressure.
Objective:
- To model a Centrifugal pump with appropriate dimensions.
- To perform a flow simulation in the Centrifugal pump with varying outlet velocity.
- To obtain the Total inlet and Outlet pressure values and the Mass flow rate.
- To plot a graph with the pressure ratio Vs Mass flow rate.
Body
- First the model of the pump is made with the basic component like Impeller, inlet pipe and outlet pipe, an extra drum is created in the boundary of the impeller with is used to define the fluid circulating area.
- A Base line simulation is run with 200 iterations and boundary layers as Environmental pressure inlet and a out let pressure of 10 m/s with an advanced refinement mesh.
- For the baseline simulation the global goals like mass flow rate and surface goals like total pressure at inlet and outlet are obtained.
- After the base line simulation, a new parametric study is created with all the goals plots, cut plots and flow trajectories for pressure and velocity.
- Rane with number simulation parameter is provide to run 6 velocities from 10 to 20 m/s.
The velocity of water are splitted into six from 10 to 20 m/s
velocity of Water at 10 m/s
Pressure of water at 10 m/s
Velocity of water at 12 m/s
Pressure of water at 12 m/s
Velocity of water at 14 m/s
Pressure of water at 14 m/s
Velocity of water at 16 m/s
Pressure of water at 16 m/s
Velocity of water at 18 m/s
Pressure of water at 18 m/s
Velocity of water at 20 m/s
Pressure of water at 20 m/s
Plots
Total pressure outlet
Total pressure Inlet
Mass flow rate
Mass fow rate Vs Pressure ratio
`Pressure ratio = (Total output pressure) / (Total Input pressure)`
The negative sign in the Mass flow rate value indicates that the mass of the fuid is leaving from the pump.

Conclusion: The flow Trajectories shows that the pressure value of the fluid will be at maximum at the inlet and the impeller and minimum at the outlet. From the pressure ratio and Mass flow rate plot we can say that the pressure ratio is nearly constant for all the velocities irrespect to the mass flow rate at the outlet.
