Centrifugal pump design and analysis
AIM: Internal flow analysis of Centrifugal pump using Solidworks.
OBJECTIVES:
- Create a 3D model of a centrifugal.
- Obtain the relationship between Pressure ratio and mass flow rate.
CENTRIFUGAL PUMP
Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. So, it converts the kinetic energy of the fluid to pressure energy. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from which it exits.
PROCEDURE
- We have to create 3D model of centrifugal pump in Solidworks.
- For flow simulation we need water-tight geometry, so we create lid at inlet runner and outlet runner.
- Now go to flow simulation and create the new wizard and give the inputs like analysis type internal flow and fluid is water and rotating region type local region average.
- Then remove the feature extrude-4 which is used for rotating effect of impeller from component control.
- Then give the boundary conditions as environment pressure at inlet runner and give outlet velocity at outlet runner.
- Give the mesh level 4.
- Create cut-plot for velocity and pressure.
- Insert the surface goal at outlet runner to calculate mass flow rate and total average pressure.
- In the flow control point set the iteration value 700 to stop the simulation.
- Now we perform parametric study. In that give outlet velocity as input and cut-plot and goal as output.

GOAL VALUE
PRESSURE RATIO VS MASS FLOW RATE GRAPH
CONCLUSION
- As we increase outlet velocity, mass flow rate increases. But the mass goes outside of the model we get the negative values of mass flow rate. So, negative sign indicates the mass flows outside the model.
- As we increase outlet velocity, pressure at outlet decreases.
- As the mass flow rate increases, pressure ration decreases.
