Centrifugal pump design and analysis

Aim:To design a model of centrifugal pump and analyze the performance of it.

Introduction:Centrifugal pumps are used to transport fluids by the conversion of rotational kinetic energy to the hydrodynamic energy of the fluid flow. The rotational energy typically comes from an engine or electric motor. They are a sub-class of dynamic axisymmetric work-absorbing turbomachinery. The fluid enters the pump impeller along or near to the rotating axis and is accelerated by the impeller, flowing radially outward into a diffuser or volute chamber (casing), from which it exits.Common uses include water, sewage, agriculture, petroleum and petrochemical pumping. Centrifugal pumps are often chosen for their high flow rate capabilities, abrasive solution compatibility, mixing potential, as well as their relatively simple engineering.

Problem Statement:For this project, show the following

  • Performance diagram. Obtain the relationship between Pressure ratio and mass flow rate and explain your results.
    • Pressure ratio = Outlet total pressure/ Inlet total pressure

Procedure:1.First the centrifugal pump model is made on SOLIDWORKS2018 with unit system 'MMGS'.

2.Now boundary condition is applied and then the trajectory is observed.

3.But in the analysis we have to see the variation of pressure ratio and mass flow rate with velocity.

4.For this we have to do the parametric study and then analyze the result.

5.Under parametric analysis, parameter choosen is velocity bw 10to20m/s with five different points and goal is set to pressure and massflow rate.

5.After parametric study the variation bw presssure ratio and mass flow rate with velocity is obtained.

Model Of Centrifugal Pump:

Simulation Condition:

Serial No. Parameters Values
1. Analysis Type Internal
2. Fluid Used Water
3. Flow type Laminar and Turbulent
4. Inlet Boundary Condition Environmental Pressure(i.e. 1bar)
5. Outlet Boundary Condition Outlet Velocity(10m/s)

Result:After applying the boundary conditions:

Flow Trajectory at 10m/s:

Parametric study analysis result:Paramteric study is done at 5 different velocities:

Mass flow rate and outlet avg pressure is obtained as:

Pressure cut plot at 10 m/s:

Pressure cut plot at 12.5m/s:

Pressure cut plot at 15m/s:

Pressure cut plot at 17.5m/s:

Pressure cut plot at 20m/s:

Table showing variation of pressure ratio with velocity:

Velocity(m/s) Pressure Ratio
10 53.88
12.5 162.842
15 62.0313
17.5 49.4036
20 71.82

Variation of pressure with respect to velocity:

Variation of mass flow rate with velocity:

Conclusion:1.It can be seen clearly in the plot that the variation of mass flow rate with valocity has linear relationship i.e. almost proportional.

2.But the variation of pressure with velocity is non linear it is somwhere increase and the decrease.

3.Similarly the pressure ration will have the non linear relation with the velocity.
