Project

Buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand

Aim:-

To perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand

Objective:-

  1. To perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand
  2. To create a metallic stiffener on the legs of the stand and run the analysis to find out the change in the buckling factor of safety.
  3. To run a design study and find the optimum position for the stiffener.
  4. To compare the results for all the cases using tables and highlight the best one

Theory:-

In engineering, buckling is the sudden change in the shape of a structural component under loads such as the bowing of a column under compression or the wrinkling of a plate under shear. If a structure is subjected to a gradually increasing load when the load reaches a critical level, a member may suddenly change shape and the structure and component are said to have buckled.

3D Model:-

  • The first fig shows the model of a cyclone separator
  • Thus, in this case, we need to perform a buckling analysis on a cyclonic separator stand thus fig 2 shows the stand on which the buckling analysis is carried out

STEPS:-

Define material for each solid, shell, and beam. (in our case the stand of cyclone separator)

Define fixture, Leg of the stand.

Define force on top of the stand

Mesh the model and run the study.

Results:-

In this case, we got Buckling Factor of safety :

2). With Stiffener at 750mm distance from top plane:

Results:

In this case , we got Buckling of Safety = 21.34

3). Design study and find the optimum position for the stiffener:

Defining Variables, constraints, Goals:

Results:

Conclusion:-

  1. The Buckling Factor of safety without stiffener is 9.3941.
  2. The Optimum Buckling Factor of safety without stiffener is 27.933401 at 1000mm from the tabletop.
