Benchmarking

BENCHMARKING:

Benchmarking is the process of measuring or comparing products, services and process against those of organization known to be their competitors in one or more aspects of their operation.

Benefits of benchmarking:

  • Keep improving internal operations.
  • Understand what’s working and what isn’t.
  • Adopt or improve upon competitors’ practices.
  • Reduce costs by increasing efficiency.

In a vehicle development process the benchmarking is done in two stages called as benchmarking 1&2.

In benchmarking1 some generic comparisons are made with the competitors vehicle such as car type, seatings, mileage etc,.

In benchmarking2 part level comparisons with more detailed stusies are made with the compertitors vehicle.

Challenge:

Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhii is a married man who lives in Bangalore which is a highly crowded city. His Family comprises five members including his wife, five-year-old boy, his father, and his mother. He visits his native place Madurai which is 500kms away from Bangalore once in a month. Also, he will be using his car to commute to his office. His budget falls between 8 to 10 lakhs on road. Please suggest to him with options so that he will buy a good car for his family.

Note: Pughazhyendhii is fond of big cars

Benchmarking for the above case:

Cars to be compared:

  1. Maruti Suzuki vitara brezza
  2. TATA Nexon
  3. Hyundai venue
  4. Ford eco sport

1.Maruti Suzuki vitara brezza:

The Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza might not break new ground for design but its boxy silhouette and upright stance give it the right look. 2020’s update that has brought in new bumpers, LED headlights and new alloy wheels adds some glamour to the look. Changes to the inside, however, are restricted to an upgraded touchscreen infotainment system. There’s nothing particularly remarkable about the dashboard design but it is well laid out and user-friendly.

  • Safety - 14.5/17
Pros:
1.Impressive efficiency
2.Practical cabin
Cons:
1.On the pricier side
2.No diesel engine option
2.TATA Nexon
The Nexon is well proportioned, high on style and looks very fashionable. It’s smartly done on the inside too and the good thing is that it’s a lot more spacious and practical than the looks would have you expect. Overall comfort is impressive but where the cabin is a bit lacking is in overall finesse.
  • Price - 7.95L
  • Mileage - 17kpl
  • Engine - 1198cc
  • Seating capacity - 5
  • Horsepower: 77 kW
  • Dimensions: 3,993 mm L x 1,811 mm W x 1,606 mm H
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual
  • Safety - 16/17
Pros:
1.Ride quality
2.Style
Cons:
1.Inconsistent quality
2.Underwhelming petrol engine
3.Hyundai venue
The Venue’s basic shape makes it look like a scaled-down Creta but styling is far more flamboyant here particularly the split headlamp arrangement. The Hyundai Venue interior is neatly styled and the dashboard that places the 8-inch touchscreen high up is particularly user-friendly. Hyundai has also incorporated plenty of storage for small items in the Venue cabin and even the boot is large enough to hold two suitcases.
  • Price - 7.62L
  • Mileage - 17. 30kpl
  • Engine - 1197cc
  • Seating capacity - 5
  • Cargo volume: 350L
  • Dimensions: 3,995 mm L x 1,770 mm W x 1,590 mm H
  • Transmission: 6-speed automatic, 6-speed manual
  • Safety ratings -
Pros:
1.High quality interior
2.Keen pricing
Cons:
1.Limited rear legroom
2.Top-spec auto misses some features
4.Ford eco sport
The Ford EcoSport has a youthful air about it and there’s a sporty vibe to the cabin as well. It’s particularly nice to see how solidly everything feels put together. However, drivers don’t get the best of views out and the thick A-pillars can be bothersome at crossroads. At the rear, comfort is fine but space is down on rivals – and not everyone will be a fan of the EcoSport’s side-opening tailgate.
  • Price - 9.27L
  • Mileage - 17kpl
  • Engine - 1497cc
  • Seating capacity - 5
  • Cargo volume: 350L
  • Dimensions: 3,998 mm L x 1,765 mm W x 1,647 mm H
  • Transmission: 5-speed manual
  • Safety ratings - 4
Pro's
1.Strong build
2.Peppy engines
Con's
1.Not as roomy as rivals
2.Thick A-pillars obstruct visibility
Conclusion:
While comparing the above vehicles I would suggest TATA Nexon for Pughazhyendii's family as it is better in safety and best of cost.
