Benchmarking
Automobile Benchmarking
Automobile benchmarking is the process of analyzing engineering choices used to design and manufacture, which may include dimensions, materials, hardware, strength of components, etc. This process includes comparing similar products made by different manufacturers.
Project Objective
The objective of this project is to find a suitable automobile for Mr D,S, Pughazhyendh. Mr. D.S. Pughazhyendhii is a married man who lives in a very crowded city. His Family has five members including his wife, five-year-old boy, his father, and his mother. He visits his native place Madurai which is 500 kms away from Bangalore once in a month. Also, he will be using his car to commute to his office. His budget falls between 8 to 10 lakhs. We are going to suggest to him with options so that he will buy a good car for his family. Mr D.S. Pughazhyendh likes big cars.
Scope
Mr D.S. Pughazhyendh is able to afford an automobile in the 8-10 Lakh price range. This rules out new luxury cars, and suggests that he is not interested in less expensive economy cars.
He needs a car that can carry at least four adults and one smaller child. In his price range, we were able to find midsize sedans.
He lives in a crowded city and commutes to work. We have assumed that he works five days per week. Fuel economy is very important, but we will assume that because he is not trying to find the cheapest car available that getting the absolute best fuel economy isn't the most important thing.
Report
We have narrowed the study down to three cars. The main parameter for selection was price. The second main parameter was the amount of passengers the car could carry, or the size of the car. The automobiles that we have chosen to include in this report are: Maruti Ciaz, Hyundai Verna, Hyundai Aura, and Swift Dzire Tour.
Cost
Maruti Ciaz 9.30 Lakh
Hyundai Verna 10.8 Lakh
Hyundai Aura 8.9 Lakh
Swift Dzire Tour 7.38 Lakh
The Maruti Ciaz matches the average price that Mr D.S. Pughazhyendh is willing to pay. The Hyundai may prove to be a much better car for just a little more money if Mr D.S. Pughazhyendh was willing to pay just a bit more.
Size (Length, Width, Height mm^3)
Maruti Ciaz 4490, 1730, 1485
Hyundai Verna 4535, 1765, 1475
Hyundai Aura 3995, 1680, 1520
Swift Dzire Tour 3995, 1695, 1555
The Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna are comparable in their overall sizes. The Swift Dzire Tour has the best head space.
The Ciaz is claimed to have the largest boot space in its class at 510 Liters, and the Verna has 528 liters. The Swift Dzire Tour has only 378 liters.
Fuel Economy
Maruti Ciaz 20.65 Kmpl
Hyundai Verna 20.6 Kmpl
Hyundai Aura 20.5 Kmpl
Swift Dzire Tour 23.15 Kmpl - 31.12 Km/Kg
Conclusion
The Maruti Ciaz seems to be the car that best fits Mr D.S. Pughazhyendh price and needs. It is a completely average car in terms of size, styling, and fuel economy. If Mr D.S. Pughazhyendh was able to find an extra 0.8 Lakh, he would be able to purchase the Hyundai Vera, which is a far more attractive car in appearance and value. The Hyundai Aura would be a good car if he was only going to use it to commute to work. It has fair exterior styling with a very nice interior. One would only drive the Swift Dzire Tour if they had to.
